September 2025 Edition

Wolverines on Woodward

Director's Letter

Labor Day arrived, bringing a cool breeze that carried away recent memories of August heat.  While we honor the contributions of all workers and say goodbye to summer, at the university we are getting our sleeves rolled up for a new semester of teaching and learning.  At the Detroit Center we will also commemorate twenty years of representing the University of Michigan on Woodward Avenue and we have a full menu of programming planned, culminating in our anniversary celebration on September 26.  Check out the schedule, come down to see us, and be sure to share some Detroit Center memories!

Sincerely,

Paul Draus

A Night of Insect Encounters: Films by Catherine Chalmers

Humanities Film Series featuring artist Catherine Chalmers

Tuesday, September 16, 2025, 6:00 PM

State Theatre, 233 S. State

Insect Encounters brings together two distinct bodies of video artwork by artist and filmmaker Catherine Chalmers: the American Cockroach series and the Leafcutters quadrilogy. The five films of American Cockroach capture a surreal and at times hauntingly anthropomorphic view of the contemporary cockroach, using intricate set design and immersive macro cinematography to trace a path from the creature’s chaotic life in the wild to a bizarre yet equally hostile existence inside modern kitchens and bathrooms. Meanwhile, the four Leafcutters videos are an unusual and mesmerizing collaboration with millions of wild ants, filmed in Panama and Costa Rica. The series focuses on four supposedly unique human traits – language, ritual, war, and art – and the narrative themes aim to blur the boundaries between human society and leafcutter ants, a species described as “the most complex social creatures other than humans.”

The films will be followed by a Q & A and a conversation with artist Catherine Chalmers, Ann Arbor Film Festival Director Leslie Raymond, and Curator Amanda Krugliak.

Michigan Room Michigan League Map

In his book Total Garbage: How We Can Fix Our Waste and Heal Our World, journalist Ed Humes employs engaging investigative storytelling to link our waste crisis to bigger issues in the humanities like ethics, community, culture, and our relationships with each other and the environment. He'll talk about his writing process and how the everyday choices we make and the systems we rely on contribute to the overwhelming problem of waste.

Edward Humes is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and narrative nonfiction writer who spends months embedded in the lives of his subjects in order to investigate and research his incredible stories about the justice system, science, nature, and sustainability. His seventeen books include Door to Door: The Magnificent, Maddening, Mississippi Mud, No Matter How Loud I Shout: A Year in the Life of Juvenile Court, and Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash.
