Intersections
Summer 2021
Dear Friends of Women & Children First,
The sun is out, and we at Women & Children First are looking to reconnect--with you, with one another, and with the wider world! Maybe you're seeking summer connections, too! While we all try to figure out how to reunite with our community in a way that feels good to all, it's always safe to connect with all the amazing books publishing this summer!

In this summer edition of our Intersections newsletter, we will share staff recommendations; upcoming titles we are excited about for kids, teens, and adults; pre-order exclusives; and more. Make sure to read to the end to see what happens when you buy a book from of the CBWP wishlist!

We wish you sunshine, picnics, laughter, reunions and hugs (if you want them!) this summer. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

In solidarity,

W&CF
STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS
Support our Social Justice
Book Group!
As part of the upcoming relaunch of our Social Justice Book Group, we hope to be able to provide a limited supply of free copies of each month's selection to book group members. A great way to support this effort is to DONATE TO THE WOMEN'S VOICES FUND. Incoming donations will go towards purchasing copies of Wretched of the Earth by Franz Fannon for the conversation on July 12 at 7 p.m. as well as books for many meetings to come!
Chicago Books for Women in Prison Bundle
We’re collaborating with Chicago Books for Women in Prison to offer a special bundle of three books every quarter. With prisons on lockdown due to COVID, it is even more critical to get books to incarcerated people. This quarter, we're celebrating Pride by focusing on books by and for LGBTQ people. Many are in prison, and they have an especially hard time getting access to books that meet their needs and wants.

When you purchase a bundle, a W&CF bookseller will thoughtfully select three books related to Pride across all genres. View the CBWP wishlist HERE to see the types of books that are frequently requested by women and trans people nationwide and that you can help make sure CBWP always has in stock.

CBWP Corner
Women & Children First is happy to host the wish list for Chicago Books to Women in Prison, an all-volunteer organization that sends books to women and trans people nationwide. Here's what happens when you buy a book for CBWP from the wish list (or from the store shelves and ask that it go to the group):
The book goes on a special backroom shelf reserved for CBWP books.
Every two weeks, a CBWP volunteer picks up the books that are waiting.
Volunteers then unpack and shelve all the books at the CBWP location.
Here's an example of an order. A volunteer hand-selects books to match.
These books were pickedincluding a Spanish textbook from the wish list.
After writing a personal note, a volunteer prepares the package for mailing.
Learn more at the CBWP website. And follow Chicago Books to Women in Prison on FacebookTwitter and Instagram.
