Hello Members and Friends of WICNM,
I’m sure I’m not the only one looking forward to cooler weather and everything that Autumn has to offer us here in our beautiful state of New Mexico. If you glance over to the north end of the Sandia Mountains you’ll see the yellow glow of an Aspen Grove surrendering to Fall; it’s also a great spot to hike out to.
We have our last regular membership meeting next week – September 16, 2021 – and I hope you will join us. This meeting is open to members and non-members so it’s also a great opportunity to check us out and meet other women in our organization. The topic is “Working with Different Generations in the Workplace” and I promise you, it’s really interesting and will give you not only a better understanding of our generations, but also an appreciation of our differences and how harmonious and beneficial those can be in a workplace setting. We will be collecting food for our local charity at the meeting (flyer below with a list of needs), Crossroads for Women; supporting women emerging from incarceration build healthy and stable lives. The Philanthropy Committee has chosen Crossroads For Women for our giving campaign to close out 2021. We will be collecting non-perishable food items for Crossroads for Women at our luncheon meeting on September 16th. For the WICNM Christmas Party, we will be participating in the Crossroad's gift donation event. (more details forthcoming). They have also moved into a new building which will provide opportunities for Women in Construction NM to do some volunteer work in 2022. Whether by donations or volunteering, WICNM is proud to partner with charities helping women in our community.

On the third Friday in September, National Tradesmen Day honors the men and women whose skills and hard work build America. And, their skills keep it running strong. The day recognizes the professionals who maintain the complex infrastructure of our roads, cities, water systems, and power grids.
While these experts work day in and out maintaining skills unique to their trade, our nation continues to operate smoothly without pause. The skills and knowledge of those in the trades keep businesses, homes, and entire nations running. Whether walls go up or come down, roads cross rivers or the water flows, electricians, plumbers, masons, mechanics, carpenters, and everyone in between ensures the job gets done.
Additionally, they pass on their skills to the next generation. Even though the industry changes, the need for it does not. In fact, as the country grows and qualified workers retire, the demand for skilled workers grows. Skilled trades are one of the fastest-growing sectors in the job market today. So, not only does their know-how keep the country going, but their salaries do, too. They’re a major influence on the economy.
Their skills and jobs are so valuable, in fact, that training is available in nearly every sector of the skilled trade job market. With their hands, skills, tools, and training, they keep America running smoothly.

Growing Opportunities for Women in Construction Management

Most people think of construction as a predominantly male industry. Historically, it has been, but that trend is changing. More and more women are choosing construction careers, diversifying the industry and offering an answer to the industry’s long time worker shortage.
Shortage of Women in Construction
Women currently make up only 9.1% of the U.S. construction workforce, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Many factors may be responsible for this disparity. Some experts identify lack of adequate training programs for women interested in pursuing construction careers, while others point to unconscious gender bias as the culprit. In any case, recruiting more women to the construction industry would have real benefits. It would not only introduce more diverse perspectives, creating greater problem-solving and creative capacity, but also address the industry’s current worker shortage.
