Women Make Movies all over the world....and we are happy to be part of two international events this month.  As part of the US State Department and USC's  American Film Showcase  cultural exchange program, the US Embassy in Tanzania brought our ED, Debra Zimmerman to the Zanzibar International Film Festival to lead a workshop for women filmmakers called WOMEN MAKE MOVIES. Co-facilitated by Aylin Basaran and Priscilla Mlay, 15 East African women filmmakers took part in the 5 day workshop and then pitched their projects.  As part of our expanding international webinar program, WMM has given all the women free access to all webinars for one year.

And from July 24-30th, Zimmerman and WMM Board member, Claire Aguilar are off to the Buenos Aires International Documentary Festival on Buenos Aires (FIDBA) where they  will serve as jury members  for the Argentine Panorama and  First Film Competition, respectively.   They will also be part of a Round Table on Production and Distribution for the International Market , along with other jury members, Paula Gastuad of Sofá Digital, Brazil and Katarzyna Wilk of the Krakow International Film Festival.

What happens when a child grows up as the only black girl in town? BLACK GIRL IN SUBURBIA, directed by Melissa Lowery,  looks at the suburbs of America from the perspective of women of color. Watch the trailer here

SIBERIAN LOVE follows filmmaker Olga Delane home to her community of birth in Siberia. The film is a fascinating study of a rural community that raises questions about domesticity, gender expectations, domestic abuse, childcare, and romance. Watch the trailer here

WHAT HAPPENED TO HERdirected by Kristy Guevara-Flanagan, is a forensic exploration of our cultural obsession with images of the dead woman on screen. Interspersing found footage and voice-over narration, the film offers a meditative critique on the trope of the dead female body.  Watch the trailer here.
