Mentoring with Lean In Energy
WiAP is excited to announce a partnership with the Women in Clean Energy community of Lean In Energy. Through this partnership, WiAP members will be able to access Lean In Energy’s Small Group Mentoring and Flash Mentoring programs. This six-month program provides entry-level professionals access to experienced mentors in the energy sector. It also provides established professionals the opportunity to serve as a mentor. Solar Sisters - Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist
Solar Sister seeks a mission-driven, energetic M&E Specialist in Tanzania and Nigeria. The Monitoring & Evaluation Manager in Tanzania will provide technical support to program implementation teams and support business development opportunities. The Monitoring & Evaluation Manager in Nigeria will partner closely with the Nigeria team as well as the U.S.-based team to create and manage the M&E systems needed to support data-driven programming.

Off Grid Energy Challenge Supports Women-Led SMEs
Power Africa partners, U.S. African Development Foundation (USADF) and All On, launched the Off-Grid Energy Challenge to support African energy entrepreneurs delivering energy solutions using solar, wind, hydro, and bioenergy technologies. Through the Off-Grid Energy Challenge, ICE Commercial Power, a renewable energy company that deploys stand-alone solar solutions for commercial and residential customers, connected 48 women-led medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to clean, reliable pay-as-you-go solar energy for productive use. Azuri Brighter Lives and Inspiring Women’s Awards
Power Africa partner, Azuri’s Brighter Lives Initiative builds quantifiable data to inform policies, enables women to take up solar and technology benefits, encourages women into solar employment and empowers them to inspire others along the way. Brighter Lives also works to ensure equal opportunities are actually equal, accounting for invisible work and social barriers which have to be mitigated before the start line. Toolkit: Delivering Gender Equality: A Best Practices Framework for Male-Dominated Industries
In 2018, USAID’s Engendering Utilities program released Delivering Gender Equality: A Best Practices Framework for Male-Dominated Industries. This toolkit provides organizations with information and practical resources to help advance gender equality in the workplace. Engendering Utilities has updated and revised this toolkit, adding new best practices, hundreds of new resources, and two new chapters on intersectionality, diversity, inclusion, and gender equality during times of crisis. Spanish and French translations are also now available.

Internship Programs for Women in Energy Sector
In recognition of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, USAID and Power Africa published highlights of three internship programs that are available to women in the energy sector in Africa.

The Power Africa-supported Women in Rwandan Energy (WIRE) initiative is working with the Rwandan Government and the private sector to bring 1,400 women into the fast-growing Rwandan energy sector. To support that goal, WIRE started an apprenticeship program in 2020 and is collaborating with Rwandan energy companies to provide on-the-job training to 115 female graduates from universities and technical colleges through a three-month apprentice program. NARUC Women in Energy Regulation Internship Program, funded by USAID and Power Africa, helps young women build knowledge in the area of energy regulation and gain the necessary technical skills and experience needed to pursue a career in the energy sector. Power Africa launched an all-female internship program in Kenya in 2020 to enable young women to acquire practical experience in technical fields, and thus develop a pipeline of qualified young women in the East African energy sector. Read more here.

Congratulations to WiAP member Jeanette Mwendwa Gitobu who was awarded the 2020 Power Gaga Award. The Power Gaga Award is given to women under the age of 30 who have made a mark in the energy space. She also received the 2020 McKinsey Women’s Achievement Award for being a woman leader improving her community. Jeanette is an alumna of the Young Women in African Power and YALI Power Africa. She currently works as a Project Developer focusing on renewable energy innovation for large scale utility projects.

Congratulations to our WiAP member Monica Maduekwe who is featured as a panelist for Empower Women, Energize the World Side Event hosted by Denmark Mission to the United Nations during the sixty-fifth session of the Commission on the Status of Women. Monica, the founder of PUTTRU Technologies Limited, spoke about how PUTTRU is strategically positioned to attract investment into women-owned energy businesses in Africa. Congratulations to the winners of the Power Africa supported Smart Communities Coalition Innovation Fund, including a special kudos to Yelekeni Farmer's Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (SACCO), a majority-female savings and credit cooperative. Comprised of refugee and host community members, the consortium will launch a solar-powered poultry hatchery. A second shout out to the Moban SACCO, BiziSol and OffGridBox consortium who will deploy kiosks fully managed and operated by women refugees.
