Solar Home Systems Power Up the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence
An uptick in GBV during Nigeria’s COVID-19 lockdown underscored the critical importance of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of GBV victims and survivors. More than ever, a reliable source of power was needed to ensure uninterrupted services. To help meet this need, Power Africa, Fenix International, and Greenlight Planet donated 110 solar home system (SHS) units to assure access to services, such as a 24-hour toll-free child helpline, and services to assault survivors remain operational. Webinar: Shining A Light on Gender-based Violence: African Utilities Respond to GBV in the Power Sector: December 2, 2020 08:00 – 09:30 EST
WiAP and USAID's Engendering Utilities program are convening African power utilities to discuss efforts to mitigate and respond to GBV. Register here to learn about the impact of GBV on women and men in the workforce, interventions that work, and the business case for effectively addressing GBV and creating a safe workplace for all employees. Speakers will also share their experiences using tools and methodologies to increase gender equality in the workplace- including Engendering Utilities’ Best Practices Framework.

Addressing Gender-Based Violence and Harassment: Emerging Good Practice for the Private Sector
Jointly commissioned by IFC, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and CDC Group, Addressing Gender-Based Violence and Harassment: Emerging Good Practice for the Private Sector outlines emerging practices in addressing gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH) in operations and investments. These practices are drawn from recent experience in the private sector, as well as a larger body of work from the non-profit sector. The guidance provides an opportunity to engage with stakeholders to refine practices as those in the private sector collectively gain implementation experience. Download here.
Covid-19 and Ending Violence Against Women and Girls
This brief highlights emerging evidence of the correlation between the global COVID-19 pandemic and increased violence against women and girls. It makes recommendations for governments, international organizations and civil society organizations to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls, at the onset, during, and after the public health crisis. It also considers the economic impact of the pandemic and its implications for violence against women and girls in the long-term. Download here.
Stepping Up Women’s STEM Careers in Infrastructure
The Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) just released a report and five case studies, describing ways to level the pathway for women entering into and progressing in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) employment within the infrastructure sectors—energy and extractives; water; transport; and digital development. Understanding Power Purchase Agreements, Second Edition
The U.S. Department of Commerce's Commercial Law Development Program, in partnership with the African Legal Support Facility, brought together a group of world-class experts-including WiAP member Jay Govender-to update and refresh the handbook five years after its original publication. The updated handbook, funded by Power Africa, includes additional insight and case studies on the negotiation of power purchase agreements for both small and large-scale projects, along with new guidance on emerging issues in the African power markets such as commercial and industrial power purchase agreements and cross-border agreements. The handbook, as well as short videos on topics covered in the handbook, can be found here.

Onyinye Anene-Nzelu has been awarded the Sub Saharan Africa Young Energy Professional 2020 by the Association of Energy Engineers, US. She is an alumnus of the Young Women in African Power and YALI Power Africa. The first female Certified Energy Manager (CEM) in Nigeria, Onyinye is a graduate of the University of Ibadan and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Onyinye is a Registered Engineer in Nigeria and volunteers with AWEDI Network, which focuses on developing women across the energy value chain.

Bilikisu Adeola Jimoh, the former Chairperson of the Liorin Branch of the Association of Women Professional Engineers, was named technical engineer of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC). She is the first female technical engineer in the company. With a career spanning 26 years, she previously worked with the Nigeria Electricity Power Authority and the Challenge Business Hub. Mrs. Jimoh holds a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical Engineering from Kwara State Polytechnic. She also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology.

Ismène Ahamide Zounmenou, the founder and director of Ismast Energy LLC, was recently featured in an interview with Power Africa partner, MCC. Ismène applied skills acquired through the MCA-Benin II Women’s Energy Entrepreneurship (WEE) initiative to help her business grow. Ismast Energy LLC is installing energy efficient street lighting on a major road works project, and conducting energy efficiency audits of factories and industrial buildings. Ismène has also forged a partnership with French multinational, Engie, to implement a $16 million off-grid electrification project co-financed by the MCC compact. Click here to learn more.

In her Ted Talk, Dr. Rose M. Mutiso, an energy researcher, makes the case for prioritizing Africa's carbon needs to foster growth and reduce the global carbon footprint. Dr. Mutiso works with a global network of experts finding solutions for energy deficits across Africa and Asia. She is also helping African women become scholars and thought leaders and co-founded the Mawazo ("Ideas") Institute, a nonprofit research institute in Nairobi. She is also research director of the Energy for Growth Hub.
