 New Hampshire Downloadable Books

The library's subscription to NH Downloadable Books provides patrons access to very expensive content, in a very cost-effective manner. This would be impossible for the library to do alone, and without the wide selection of available titles. Patrons can download e-books, audiobooks, and magazines to their computer, tablet, smartphone or Kindle. Download the Libby for Overdrive app from your device’s App Store.

The Libby app will be used and linked directly to your library card. Be aware that if you are not able to download an item, it may be because you have an overdue book on your account,

or your card has expired.

Children and Family

New Hampshire 1000 Books Before Kindergarten

The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler.
The goal is to read 1,000 books before your little one starts kindergarten- and yes you can repeat books! We know that all kids have favorites! If you read just 1 book a night, you will have read 365 books in a year. By the time they start kindergarten, it's possible to have read 1,825 books together!
Not only will your child benefit from having a larger vocabulary, and more interest in reading, but studies have shown that reading to a child daily is an early indicator of academic success. The bonding time while you read to/with a child is possibly one of the most wonderful benefits!
Do you have questions? Need more logs?
 Please call the library!

Orion Starblast Telescope

Did you know that we have a telescope available for you to check out? Adult patrons in good standing can borrow the telescope for one week. The telescope was donated and is fostered by the NH Astronomical Society, part of the Library Telescope Program. Call for information.

Story Time!

Story Time will return this Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

Our Story Time is a fun and interactive program that combines

read-aloud stories, songs, rhymes, flannel boards, and some dancing!

After the activities, we provide a "Stay and Play" component. This is a great opportunity for children to play and moms/dads to meet and mingle.

Read to a Dog

Why read to a dog? Because dogs are friendly and comfy, judgement-free (no pressure!), and they love the attention of being read to.

Kids will gain more confidence in their reading aloud skills, and enjoy the company of a new friend.

Reading to Dogs is a reading program designed to improve children's reading skills, but also a wonderful opportunity to be with a comfy pet.

Read aloud to a registered/certified therapy dog from Therapy Dogs International, Chapter 205.

Children in Grade K-4 who register will have a 20 minute session. Sessions run 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM on the following Thursdays:

Reading sessions will resume shortly.

Connecting to Nature for Well-being

Thursday, January 16, 2025 11:00 AM

Upper Town Hall and Koerber Trail

Presented by Kelly Dwyer

On January 16, 2025, with the holidays a distant memory and the promising energy of spring months away, many of us will be feeling the mid-winter blahs. What should be a season of rest has become a time of restlessness. Nature to the rescue!

Using the natural world as our classroom, we will engage our senses to explore fun techniques and ideas to increase our joy and sense of well-being.

Join Kelly Dwyer for a refreshing sensory experience as we meander along the easy and flat Koerber Trail, connecting to the surprises nature provides us when we set the intention to be present!

Please come prepared for 45 minutes outside! Please dress warmly and wear boots or sturdy shoes for walking. We will begin this program in the library and then head out for our gentle stroll.

Kelly Dwyer, founder of Nature Education Opportunities, is an award-winning environmental educator and certified NH elementary teacher. She has been creating and delivering engaging programming for audiences of all ages for over 15 years.

As a certified wellness coach, Kelly also brings a deep understanding of the numerous benefits of connecting with the natural world to reduce stress, improve health and embrace a more mindful approach to life and learning.

Coral Restoration Presentation

Thursday, January 16, 2025

 6:30 PM

Upper Town Hall

Join Dunbarton native Christopher Koerber as he gives a talk about his work in coral gardening and restoration.

From the shores of Florida to the islands of Japan, from the Midway atoll to southern Australia, an unheralded ecological regeneration might just be underway. Reef-building coral, which has become ever more threatened in the superheated waters of the tropics, is making a bid for survival by migrating to subtropical climes that meet its temperature requirements.

Wildlife in Our Backyards:

 Meet Your Neighbors!

Tuesday, February 25, 2025 6:30 PM

 Upper Town Hall

Presented by Kelly Dwyer

Nature Education Opportunities

Picture your backyard and envision gray squirrels, those forest acrobats, springing between the thin treetop branches. Chipmunks scampering on the ground, vacuuming up seeds at a frenzied pace. Possums and skunks are active at night, leaving evidence of their presence with prints in the snow or mud (or dug up lawns!).

We see and hear these amazing mammals, including foxes and coyotes, throughout the year as they share outdoor spaces with us. Join Kelly Dwyer as we explore:

  • · Fascinating natural histories of these animals.
  • · Essential ecological roles they play in various habitats.
  • · Strategies we can adopt to keep them safe and healthy and co-exist together!

Upcoming New Hampshire Humanities presentations:

Covered Bridges of New Hampshire: Past and Present

Presented by Kim Varney Chandler

Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at 6:30 PM,

Upper Town Hall

New Hampshire was once home to over 300 covered bridges. Today, there are over sixty authentic covered bridges in New Hampshire, forty-six of which are over a century old. These bridges exist solely because of the efforts of a small but powerful community that both recognized their significance and honored their tradition. Join author and photographer Kim Varney Chandler as she shares an overview of covered bridges in the Granite State, along with interesting facts she uncovered while researching her 2022 book, Covered Bridges of New Hampshire. Learn more about both existing and lost covered bridges in your area.

Robert Frost On the Farm: New Hampshire Farming as told by the poet.

Presented by Jeff Zygmont

Tuesday, March 25, 2025

6:30 PM Upper Town Hall

While it makes spoken words sing like sauntering music, Robert Frost’s poetry can also help us appreciate the rigor of life on a New England farm in the early 20th century. (Hint: It was hard.) In an exploration of both New Hampshire history and Frost’s poetry, author and poet Jeffrey Zygmont recites a selection of Frost’s poems about farming. Alongside each recitation, he provides background on Frost’s life, offering insight into the poem’s origins, and commentary on the work’s artistic beauty, as well as the experiences and emotions it expresses. Participants will join a lively discussion celebrating Robert Frost’s unique gift for capturing farm life in poetry.
