CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH 
WITH A TALK ABOUT 
THE  BLOOMING GROVES'  HELLFIGHTERS

On Wednesday, February 28  Moffat Library local history librarian Matthew Thorenz presented on the Blooming Groves' Hellfighters, a  looking at a group of local soldiers who served their country bravely overseas and fought on the front lines of racial justice and equality at home.  

Their contributions to American culture would help define the age that was to follow the First World War. The Blooming Grove boys (Robert Baldwin, James Chambers, Hector Lewis, and James Lewis) in Company K, Third Battalion, 369th Infantry were the infamous "Harlem Hellfighters," whose story you can read on the Library's local history blog.

Attending the lecture were Washingtonville High School ?th grade History Class whose teacher (Mr./Ms.?) assigned the lecture as a class requirement.  ?? expressed amazement that Washingtonville denizens featured so prominently in global affairs during WWI.

The Orange County Food Preservation Battalion and the First World War

For Women's History month, food historian Sarah Wassberg Johnson will speak about a group of local women who organized the "Orange County Food Preservation Battalion," and taught farmers throughout Orange County how to preserve perishable food-stuffs during the food rationing of World War I.
