Women's History Month

Honoring Harriet Jacobs for Women's History Month


An extraordinary woman born into slavery in North Carolina defied unimaginable odds to reclaim her freedom, along the way, helping countless during the Civil War and Reconstruction. An abolitionist and Women's Suffrage activist, Jacobs was also an author, describing the realities of enslaved women and their struggles for dignity and equality.

A virtual postpartum group for Black mamas with children up to 3 years old meets every second and fourth Friday of the month from

11 am to 12 pm (PST). Most meetings are virtual with periodic in-person family-friendly activities.

Training for Maternity Providers in Ghana and Kenya


Principal Investigator Patience Afulani and the Caring for Providers to Improve Patient Experience team completed training for 46 maternity providers in the Upper East and North East regions of Ghana recently. The education focused on person-centered maternity care, stress management, and emergency response and has now trained nearly 200 healthcare providers across 20 facilities.

Women's History Month Event: Reimagining Justice


In celebration of Women’s History Month, join the Oakland Museum of California for an interactive conversation with Black liberation advocate, Malkia Devich-Cyril, and activist-astrologer, Jessica Lanyadoo The event includes musical performances by Bay Area based and internationally acclaimed Iranian singer Mahsa Vahdat and musician, Atabak Elyas.

Unconditional Cash Transfer Program Webinar


The Mother and Infant Cash Coalition will be co-hosting a webinar with UCLA's Center on Reproductive Health, Law, and Policy on unconditional cash as a strategy for advancing reproductive justice. The event's conversation on the recent policy brief as well as the ways that five organizations (including the Abundant Birth Project) are seeing direct cash support address the negative effects of inequality.

Breyonna Gaines-Barrett

It wasn't until she became pregnant with her first child that Breyonna ever heard about doulas. Living in Fresno, Breyonna found few support systems for pregnant people, something that inspired her journey to become a doula and pursue a public health degree.

Mom, Health Educator, Fresno County Perinatal Equity Initiative Coordinator


Coming from Ghana, Gifty was aware of the healthcare challenges faced by developing nations but was shocked to encounter a maternal health crisis in the US for Black people. This realization inspired Gifty to work to make a difference in birth equity.
