Heather Roberts is a Senior Project Manager at Pepco in Washington D.C. and surrounding areas. π·ββοΈ Heather has a degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in power, and she is proud to use that experience in her career to help power our nation's capital. β‘ For National Engineering Week, Heather was featured in a video from the Edison Electric Institute where she talks about her day to day work at her job, and her advice for young women hoping to become engineers. βοΈ

π₯ Adriana Gonzales Rivera talks about her internship with BGE
|
|
BGE is looking for highly motivated high school students to join their Smart Energy Workforce Development Summer Internship program! π·ββοΈ This program is a 6 week virtual paid internship opportunity. A laptop and hotspot will be provided to participants. Interns will get mentorship and networking opportunities, learn more about the company and future job opportunities, and meet students from other schools throughout the Baltimore region! To apply, you must be a rising senior or recent graduate, be available from 6/28/21 - 8/6/21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and live in the BGE Service Territory.
Interns earn between $12β$13 an hour and also prepare for the industry required Construction and Skilled Trades test (CAST), as passing this test is a mandatory requirement to be eligible for many entry level positions at BGE.

Special Announcement: Exelon Foundation STEM Leadership Academy Scholarship Program π
|
|
The Exelon STEM Leadership Academy is pleased to announce that the Exelon Foundation is creating a STEM Leadership Academy Scholarship for Academy alumnae. π©βπ This scholarship is designed to be a supportive and clear pathway from student engagement in the Academy to entry into the energy workforce, ideally as an Exelon employee. The scholarship, launching this spring, is available to STEM Leadership Academy alumnae who are graduating from high school in 2021 or who have already begun their post-secondary education at a two or four year educational institution.
The scholarship will:
- Be both financial need based and academic based.
- Be available as a two or four year scholarship, renewable for up to four years (for undergraduate work).
- Be open to alumnae with a 2.8 GPA.
- Include an annual Exelon internship.
Preference will be given to:
- Alumnae pursuing the following fields of study: engineering; finance/business; IT; supply chain management. A change of major may impact continuation of scholarship.
- Alumnae who are attending an educational institution within the Exelon company service footprint.
The scholarship application will require two recommendations, standard application questions, and a series of open response questions that include:
- In 500 words or fewer, please provide a personal statement on:
- why you are pursuing a career in the energy sector;
- what energy challenges are you most excited to solve;
- and why you would like to work at Exelon specifically should the opportunity present itself
- A personal statement about how the Exelon STEM Leadership Academy supported your education and career path.
- A personal statement about how you hope to give back to your community after you benefit from this opportunity.
The application portal is expected to open in early March with a due date in late March/early April. Stay tuned for more information on how to apply!

Women in Aviation International is hosting a free Girls in Aviation Day Discussion on Saturday, March 13th, from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. CST/1:00 - 3:00 p.m. EST. π« This event will feature the female leaders of the United States Air Force Thunderbirds and Jasmin Moghbeli, NASA Astronaut. π©βπ Jasmin Moghbeli was selected by NASA to join the 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class. She reported for duty in August 2017 and having completed the initial astronaut candidate training is now eligible for a mission assignment. Register below to hear from Jasmin and the Thunderbirds!

Research Opportunity: π¬ Join other citizen scientists on Zooniverse for projects like The Arctic Bear Project. For this project, scientists are learning how polar, grizzly, and black bears behave in the changing Arctic environment, with special attention to how they interact with people. π» They do this with help from people like you that analyze data and watch streams of the bears to document their actions! There are also many other projects that need help from citizen scientists, like Dark Energy Explorers, AI4Mars, and much more!

β¨ STEM Leadership Academy Alumnae Spotlight β¨
|
|
Nasrin Ali, alumna from the 2020 D.C./Maryland Academy, has received the Maryland Affiliate NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing. She has also received honorable mention on the national level. The award, sponsored by the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT), recognizes high school students for their computing-related achievements and interests as part of an effort to encourage more young women to choose careers in technology. Kayla Murray, alumna from the 2019 Philadelphia Academy, is a Freshman at the University of Scranton majoring in Forensic Chemistry. She made the Dean's list her first semester, and is hoping to do it again this semester! Kayla says, "The STEM Academy provided me with great tools. Teamwork, an eye for detail, and thinking outside the box are skills I use every day. Persevere! Great things will happen!" Keep up the amazing work Kayla!

In Lab Girl, Hope Jahren chronicles her lifelong passion for nature and science. She explores her relationship with her parents and the impact it had in cultivating her love of science as a child, and how her passion for plants and science gave her a deeper insight into herself.

Exelon Foundation STEM Leadership Academy Applications are OPEN!

Reminder: the application for the summer 2021 Exelon Foundation STEM Leadership Academy are open through April 25th π
The Exelon STEM Leadership Academy is a free, week-long, residential* program for 10th and 11th grade girls interested in STEM to learn from women working in STEM and other leaders; π©βπ¬ explore sustainability, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and climate change; π and connect with like-minded peers. π‘ The Academy concludes with an energy challenge and a chance to win great prizes! Each participant will also receive an iPad to use for Academy activities and to take home at the end of the week. Past Academy attendees, please share with friends!
*We are closely monitoring the Covid-19 public health situation. The 2021 Academy is being planned as an in person, on campus event but may be converted to a virtual event based on local health recommendations and requirements.
