Letter from the President
Dear members,
This has been a very exciting time for the Women's Jewelry Association. We recognized that our members needed more value out of their WJA memberships and have been working hard on accomplishing just that.
As you know, we created three pillars: Members Services, Education and Leadership Development. Recently, we added an on-line career center and exclusive access to discounted rates on trend-forecasting reports. In addition, we are continuing to offer merchant service options, an online library of recommended reading, and a networking platform via LinkedIn and Facebook.
We also had our annual educational Women in the Know Conference in January, right before the JIC and 24 Karat Club dinners.
If you are a designer, make sure you participate in our DIVA design competition. The theme this year is: Green DIVA - Conscious jewels for today's conscious consumer. Log onto the WJA website, www.womensjewelryassociation.com, to enter!
Don't miss our other exciting, upcoming events:
WJA Summer Celebration at JCK Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay on June 5th from 9-11pm
WJA Annual 'Awards for Excellence' gala on Monday, July 25th at Pier 60, Chelsea Piers, New York City
We have three amazing Hall of Fame award recipients this year, including:
- Hall of Fame - Varda Shine, Diamond Trading Company
- Ben Kaiser - Matt Stuller, Stuller Inc.
- Corporate Award for Excellence - Helzberg Diamonds
This year's Awards for Excellence Gala is going to be one of the most exciting ones yet! Later this month, we will be unveiling the final, individual category nominees based on the names you submitted. Please make sure to contact Nicole Lichwick in our office for sponsorship opportunities, commemorative journal ads, and ticket purchases.
I want to take a minute to thank our very hard working, international board of directors and all of our chapter presidents for not just volunteering their time but for caring as much about our organization as they do about their own professions. It really speaks mountains about the power of female collaboration and what we can accomplish when we work together to achieve a greater mission.
Congratulations and thank you, everyone!
Warm regards, Kendra Bridel Weinman |

WJA Gears Up for Annual Awards For Excellence Gala
Save the Date! The annual WJA Awards for Excellence Gala will be held Monday, July 25, at Pier 60 on the Chelsea Piers in New York City.
The 2011 honorees are:
Hall of Fame: Varda Shine, Diamond Trading Company
International (DTCI)Ben Kaiser Award: Matt Stuller, Stuller, Inc.
Corporate Award: Helzberg Diamonds
Varda Shine, managing director of DTCI, London, United Kingdom, will receive WJA's 2011 Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award. Having impressively moved up the ranks throughout 22 years working in various aspects of the De Beers Group of companies, she was appointed managing director in 2006. She is a pioneer in the industry and an inspiration to women both within and outside the jewelry industry.
"I'm humbled yet delighted to receive this award from the Women's Jewelry Association," she said. "Having spent over 25 years in the diamond industry, I have first-hand experience of how tough it can be for women to succeed in business generally, let alone in one that used to be as old-fashioned and male-dominated as the diamond business. Happily, I believe we are now seeing more opportunities opening up for women in the diamond world and I am proud that De Beers has recognized and embraced the value that women can add in this industry, as evidenced by the fact that two of the six major businesses in the De Beers family now have women as chief executives. We still have a long way to go, but I am hugely honored to be recognized by my female peers in the jewelry industry and am proud to be keeping such esteemed (and glamorous!) company."
Matt Stuller, founder, chief executive officer and global strategist of Stuller, Inc., Lafayette, La., will receive the WJA Ben Kaiser Award. Stuller built his eponymous company from the ground up, to become an ultra-modern manufacturing facility that produces 340,000 jewelry-related products. The company and its subsidiaries now employ 2,000 people on three continents, and it is a De Beers Diamond Trading Company sightholder. Stuller's determination, vision, and commitment to excellence has guided not only his business, but is demonstrated on the many boards on which he serves and gives back his time.
Helzberg Diamonds' continued commitment to the advancement of women in the jewelry industry made it an ideal candidate for WJA's Corporate Award for Excellence. Helzberg Diamonds, a retail and online jewelry store focused on customer service, was founded in 1915 and has more than 230 stores nationwide. Based in North Kansas City, Mo., Helzberg Diamonds is part of the Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. (NYSE symbol BRK/B) family of companies.
"On behalf of Helzberg Diamonds, I am pleased to accept the Women's Jewelry Association's Corporate Award for Excellence," noted Beryl Raff, chairman and CEO of Helzberg Diamonds since 2004. "Helzberg Diamonds has a rich history of leadership in the jewelry industry and our commitment to the professional development and advancement of female associates is no exception. The entire team at Helzberg is honored to receive this recognition."
WJA also will present category Awards for Excellence in retail, design, manufacturing/supplier, sales, marketing and communications, editorial/reporting/publishing, and special services.
"We are extremely proud to award these three deserving recipients," said Kendra Bridel Weinman, international president of the Women's Jewelry Association. These individuals and their organizations perfectly embody our mission as an organization-to empower women to reach their greatest potential." WJA would like to thank the sponsors who are already committed to supporting this outstanding annual event. At press time, those included:

Lorraine Garvey: In Memoriam
It is with great sadness that WJA announces the passing of one of its most esteemed and beloved members.

Lorraine H. Garvey, 63, president of the New England chapter from 1999 through 2005 and the first chapter president to host the annual WJA Presidents' Conference, died March 3 after a lengthy, brave battle with cancer. She was an active member of the WJA National Board for many years, participating on many different committees. Board members fondly remember her respectful, yet no-nonsense ability to cut through discussion and get to the heart of an issue and get it resolved satisfactorily.
Lorraine's career in the fine jewelry industry began in 1994 with Fedra International, a jewelry wholesaler, where she was the national sales manager and administrator. In 1998, she established Loren Enterprises, a contemporary sales and marketing company to promote sales and marketing to unique companies in the United States, Canada, and Europe. By the year 2000, she had established and managed the complete operation of Friedrich Stahl Design USA, the American arm of a well-known German contemporary fine jewelry manufacturer. She also held a number of other high-level positions with overseas jewelry companies who wanted to establish a presence in the U.S. market.
A mother of two and grandmother of three, busy Lorraine still gave generously of her spare time not only to WJA, but also to various civic and charitable organizations such as the American Diabetes Association and the American Cancer Society.
Linda Goldstein, one of WJA's original founding members, summed it up eloquently and simply, "She was a wonderful woman."
Those who wish to remember Lorraine with a monetary contribution are asked to make a donation in her memory to Rhode Island Partnership Foundation, 1283 Mendon Road, Cumberland, RI 02864. All proceeds will benefit The RI Blood Center, a cause very close to her heart.
To sign or view memories of Lorraine for her family, her online guestbook is here. Said New England WJA chapter president Karen Golembeski in her online tribute to Lorraine, "I am now a regular blood donor in her honor and memory, and urge others to do the same. I am proud to follow in her foot steps at WJA, and will continue her many good works."

Are You a GREEN DIVA? Attention jewelry designers! The Women's Jewelry Association DIVA Design Competition is now open for entries. This year's theme, GREEN DIVA: Eco-Conscious Jewels for Today's Green Consumer, reflects the current interest in recycled, reclaimed, repurposed, and/or ethically mined materials that fits in with the eco-conscious jewelry movement. Cindy Edelstein, president of Jewelers Resource Bureau and chair of the WJA DIVA Design Competition, invites designers to "design a jewel for each category that shines a light on the eco-conscious jewelry movement-materials that are ethically mined, designs that feature recycled or reclaimed materials and carry a message through their theme, and/or materials that show fine jewelry can be green jewelry. The GREEN DIVA is for the consumer who supports her causes and her beliefs with her fine jewelry choices. Designers must state how their entries support the eco-conscious theme, no matter how far reaching their design may be towards that goal. The challenge is to think of alternatives, to imagine new ways for old things, and/or imagine or incorporate new technologies and sources. Designers are invited to submit entries in any of the GREEN DIVA categories: Daytime Jewel Evening Jewel Men's Jewel Designers should submit entries electronically no later than April 25 at our online DIVA Design Competition web site: https://www.callforentry.org, and scroll down to WJA listing. Designers may enter up to three designs in any or all of the categories. All designs must incorporate precious materials. See the online call-for-entry for all the contest rules and details. Judging will be completed by May 10 with winners notified shortly thereafter. All award recipients will be invited to attend the WJA DIVA news conference to be held Friday afternoon, June 3, during The JCK Las Vegas Show, where they will be recognized as WJA DIVA award recipients. Award recipients also will be invited to attend the WJA Summer Celebration during the JCK reception Sunday, June 5. First-place winners in each category will receive a cash prize of $750 and a crystal award trophy. First and second runner-up entrants in each category will receive a certificate of achievement. WJA will recognize the award recipients in a news release sent to all jewelry trade media. |
WJA 2011 Grants and Scholarships: Application Deadline Approaching!
To empower both members and students in the jewelry, watch, and related industries, the Women's Jewelry Association offers two types of educational financial aid: student scholarships and member grants.
Student scholarships, in varying amounts beginning at $500 and going as high as $7000, are available to female students (including WJA members) who are enrolled in fine jewelry and watch design courses, with classes that will be held between August 1, 2011 and July 31, 2012.
In 2010, WJA awarded $20,000 in scholarships to six students. Click here to see the 2010 scholarship award winners.
The application for 2011 now is available. This year WJA is awarding scholarships in three different categories:
1. The Designer/Creator Category (based on images of finished pieces designed and created by the student),
2. The Designer Category (based on designs by the student, including CAD and drawings).
3. The Non-Designer Category (essay-based for those studying to be a gemologist, appraiser, watchmaker, bench jeweler, or retailer)
The application is available online through www.callforentry.org. Applications are due April 15th, 2011. Any questions, e-mail Lisa Slovis Mandel, WJA Scholarship chair, at lisa@lisaslovis.com.
Member Grants are awarded to WJA female members in increments of $500, towards professional growth. Recipients must be full members in good standing. (Student members are not eligible for member grants, but are encouraged to apply for student scholarships as above.)
For more information about member grants, e-mail Alexandra Hart, WJA National Grant chair, at info@alexandrahart.com
Funds for grants come from the national Women's Jewelry Association, its chapters, and from companies and/or individuals who generously support WJA's mission. |
News from the WJA Chapters
METROPOLITAN (NEW YORK)
The Metro New York chapter braved winter winds and snow to get together for a number of late winter events. We are definitely ready for spring here in New York!
On both Feb. 16 and March 15th, about 35 members and guests warmed up at Gstaad on W. 26th St. for our popular "Third Tuesday Metro Mix & Mingle." It is a great, casual location for our 3-M event. Join us!
On Feb. 23, we hosted a 3C "Chew, Chat, and Chill" dinner at Madison Bistro near E. 37th St. Robin Holder, brand management director at Rue La La, the invitation-only shopping site, spoke about this newest form of e-commerce.
Holder shared a wealth of information about Rue La La users and here's just a sliver: there are 3.2 million members-50% more than $100k per year; 50% are between ages 35-64; 75% are female, and users are evenly divided between single and attached. Attendees learned how they could get involved, too!
On Thursday evening, March 3, about 30 guests, including several Metro board members, gathered at the beautiful offices of Circa on Madison Avenue, to welcome new Metro chapter members at a new member cocktail party. Many thanks to Circa for helping to make the evening possible.
On May 18, the chapter is planning its 2nd annual Spring Fling event with Marie Claire magazine at the beautiful Hearst Tower. Look for a Save the Date announcement in your inbox soon.
And last but not least: The Metro chapter feels one of its greatest missions is to give a leg up to our industry's newest members. We've been conducting successful speed mentoring events at both FIT and GIA in New York for several years.
Recently, through the generosity of Riva Jewelry Manufacturing in Long Island City, we have also been able to take small groups of students on factory tours at Riva's modern, high-tech facility. It has been an eye-opening experience for those lucky enough to participate, allowing these future jewelry industry members a taste of the real world.
Until next time!
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
We celebrated the beginning of 2011 in January with our annual Holiday Party at E&O Trading Restaurant in San Francisco. Members came together from all areas of the Bay Area to attend a dinner and lecture, "2011: A Colorful Year Ahead", by Adam Graham of AGTA. Adam is the Marketing Manager for AGTA, whose primary mission it is to promote the sale and use of colored gemstones and pearls.
Adam gave a lively presentation, highlighting the colors and trends for 2011, popular gemstones, and insights into jewelry design from the recent Spectrum Awards competition. He also gave us a sneak preview of jewelry some of the stars would be wearing at the Golden Globes! We all felt inspired by his presentation and a bit more informed as many of us prepared to head off to the Tucson Gem Show.
Adam also presented our chapter with a $500 gift from AGTA to go towards our Scholarship Fund. It was a wonderful evening of socializing with old friends and new members!
In April we are looking forward to hosting out first "Spring Swap Meet" (date TBA). We are creating an event where members will have an opportunity to swap out, sell, or trade, their old tired merchandise, gems, findings, etc. Someone's old stock could be another's gold mine! It will be like an old-fashioned flea market, where each member will have their own table with their wares, and there will be a lot of trading, selling, and bartering going on.
It should be a fabulous event, stay tuned for the date!
LOS ANGELES
The Los Angeles Chapter recently held its first Chat 'n Chill of the year on February 16th at Bar Bouchon in Beverly Hills. The gathering was extremely successful with more than 25 attending. Chat 'n Chills are a great way to meet friends, network, and enjoy a glass of wine at one of L.A.'s great neighborhood bars. There is no charge to attend, and the events are open to members and non-members alike. The LA chapter hosts at least one Chat 'n Chill every quarter; the next one is scheduled for mid-May.
On Wednesday, March 9, the Los Angeles Chapter, in a first joint program together with the 24 Karat Club of Southern California, co-hosted a "Meet the Media" panel discussion at the contemporary Andaz Hotel on the famous Sunset Strip in Hollywood.

A packed room for the joint WJA-LA/24 Karat media event.
The panel discussion focused on giving attendees the "inside scoop" on how to best reach influential individuals as part of their public relations and product placement efforts, as well as trend predictions from each panelist.
Panel moderator was Randi Molofsky Lithgow, a New York-based journalist, author, and the chief curator for the online luxury shopping website Portero.com. Panelists included Victoria Gomelsky, editor-in-chief of JCK magazine and contributing luxury editor for the International Herald Tribune; Hellin Kay, a contributing fashion editor for Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Russian Vogue, Women's Wear Daily, and a celebrity fashion photographer; and Kit Scarbo, celebrity and wardrobe stylist for E! Entertainment and Dancing with the Stars, and a former contestant on Project Runway.
A Q&A with the panelists followed the discussion.
Our chapter's holiday party is something we look forward with great anticipation. It's always a wonderful time to come together and celebrate the year. Over time, these parties have taken place at homes and hotels. We've "gone potluck", we've had them catered, and we've celebrated at our longstanding member Janet's house!
But having a private party at the San Diego Natural History Museum-around a gem and jewelry exhibit, no less-that was a WJA San Diego first!

One of the beautiful gemstone butterflies on view at the San Diego Natural History Museum. (Photo courtesy R. Weldon)
The special treat was a tour by its curator, WJA San Diego Chapter member Elise Misiorowski, GG. On December 8th, 2010 we celebrated and sparkled among a spectacular display of natural mineral crystals, jewelry, and works of art. Our chapter was treated to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to wine and dine among stunning objects that are on loan from private collectors, and major U.S. institutions including The American Museum of Natural History, Gemological Institute of America (GIA), Harvard University Mineralogical Museum, Newark Museum, National Museum of Natural History, and The Smithsonian Institution.
The evening was nothing less than amazing and jaw-dropping. It was so wonderful to wander the 5,000 square foot exhibit space with our chapter members, colleagues, and friends. It was an unforgettable night.
At press time, the chapter was planning a social-media event for March 30th in Carlsbad.
Finally, every last Thursday of the month, WJA San Diego holds a Happy Hour at different locations throughout the county. Here's how it works: each one of our board members have volunteered to lead a "Last Thursday" Happy Hour. That means the leader picks the location and is at the venue at 6:30pm. Participants buy their own food and drinks. These get-togethers provide an opportunity to meet in a casual environment, invite guests, and socialize. So, whatever you do this year, don't forget: it is every last Thursday!
MIDWEST
The Midwest Chapter sure knows how to start the year off right! On January 16, members hopped aboard a luxury chartered bus from the jewelry district in downtown Chicago and headed to the Indianapolis Museum of Fine Arts (IMA); an all-day excursion to see the acclaimed exhibit, Read My Pins; The Madeleine Albright Collection. It surely will have lasting memories.
Organized by the Museum of Arts and Design, Read my Pins; The Madeleine Albright Collection highlights more than 200 pins from the unique collection of the former Secretary of State.
The bus ride was buzzing with current members and friends networking and catching up with industry news. Time just flew by as we also enjoyed fresh baked breads and flaky croissants for breakfast as we rode. Then, awaiting us at the IMA was a group of jewelry professional women from the Indianapolis area-most of whom we were meeting for the first time.

WJA Midwest members from Chicago and Indianapolist met at the museum.
First, we had lunch in the IMA caf, and then we enjoyed a docent-led tour of the exhibit. The Madeleine Albright collection includes pins of every description, many with fascinating stories attached. One of the pins in the collection has a story very special to our chapter. In 1997 WJA Midwest raised awareness for the Chicago Abused Women's Coalition and sponsored a design competition called "Breaking Free". The winning design was produced and sold. One "Breaking Free" pin found its way into Madeline Albright's collection. This award-winning pin is also pictured in Madeleine Albright's book. It was amazing to see it in the museum, in her book, and on WJA member Karla Lewis' lapel! Karla wore her pin to the exhibit.
Karla and her famous pin
After viewing other artworks in the IMA and, of course, much shopping in the museum's fabulous gift stores, we had to say goodbye to all our new Indy friends and board the bus back to Chicago.
A few comments from those who attended this event:
To see an exhibit of beautiful and meaningful pins from Madeleine Albright's collection was inspiring, but to be able to see this collection with the ladies in our industry and spend the day together was so much fun. Getting to know each other on so many levels makes WJA what it was meant to be. --Penny Ruston
It was amazing to see the Albright pin collection up close! I had the honor of being the very first customer in the museum's gift shop! Purchased a lovely multi-strand bracelet and a paperweight to add to my collection. --Barbara Palumbo
I made a great connection, and have found a new colored stone dealer. --Holly Reyome
I want to thank everyone that came to the IMA. The professionalism and knowledge of the trade was a much needed moral booster here in Indianapolis and it has inspired many. I now have a firm commitment of several women to join WJA and help me get an affiliate group started in Indianapolis. --Sherri Roizen-Watson
Thank you to Midwest board members Denise Hartman of N. Green & Son in Chicago and Sherri Roizen-Watson of Isaac Davidowits in Indianapolis for coordinating this fabulous event.
The New England chapter has been very busy. Among last year's many events were a beading party, a summer outing, a headshot event, a holiday event, and the now-famous "Chew, Chat, 'N Chill" events. The scrapbook montage of photos below shows how much fun was had by all.

Left to right: Graduate Student Anastasia Azure, a WJA scholarship winner of the June Herman Scholarship of $4,000 from the Rhode Island School Design (RISD), attends the New England Chapter Holiday Party as the chapter's guest. She showcased her collection, and donated a piece to the chapter's silent auction so that others might also benefit from the scholarships.Says chapter president Karen Golembeski, "Again, WJA at its best."
Chapter president Karen Golembeski was interviewed at length in the Providence Business News, about WJA and how it helps women succeed in the jewelry industry. Click here to read the entire article.
For 2011, at press time the chapter's big spring event was a March 31 gathering at the Tree House Tavern & Bistro in Warwick, RI. Featured speaker was Carrie Soucy, founder and president of Miamore Communications, a boutique agency offering a full slate of services including public relations, social media marketing, and creative and event marketing for both small businesses and national brands in the luxury and lifestyle categories.
Upcoming events include a networking event April 28, a trends event May 19, a "networking by the bay" event June 16, a wine-tasting event in September, another networking event later in the fall, and the annual holiday party, date TBD. SOUTHWEST
The chapter recently held its annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas, electing new board members and recruiting some amazing individuals in each state. The 7-state chapter has adapted a "Road Trip" theme where it will be recruiting new members and attempting to set up smaller groups in each area so that members can meet quarterly and feel the benefits from a support network of other women in their area.
The chapter also recently launched its Facebook page, featuring news, events, and pictures from members. Log on to Facebook, WJA Southwest Chapter, to see what's up.
Finally, kudos to two Southwest members, Kendra Scott of Austin and Amber Gustafson of Houston, who were recently featured in InStore magazine.
Congratulations!
TWIN CITIES
In February, the Twin Cities Chapter took an exclusive backstage tour of ShopNBC, the Minneapolis-based TV and online retailer. The 24-hour network reaches 73 million homes in the United States, selling fine jewelry, brand-name watches, premium beauty items, quality home products, and much more.
We learned much that members can apply in their jewelry marketing and sales endeavors:
1. Make sure that every sales associate learns the stories behind the designers, the jewelry lines, the stones, and metals in your inventory.
2. If you are a designer, wholesaler, or manufacturer, provide your clients with the stories behind the merchandise. Your clients will remember the stories better if you can share them in person. Barring that, use video, teleconference, or print.
3. Practice telling the stories so they come quickly, easily, and naturally.
4. Delight your customers by sharing the stories, lore, gemstone sources, and key benefits.
5. Make every purchase an unforgettable shopping experience.
6. While a specific item may not trip your trigger, there is a customer out there who will ADORE that item. Get to know your customers so you can find the right customer for each piece. Picture who would LOVE that piece, then reach out to that customer.
7. Think of your store as a stage. When you open the doors, it's show time! Time to educate, entertain, and delight your customers. Pretend the camera is rolling so you project your very best self
8. Monitor what sells and what doesn't. If it sells well, order more right away and sell more. If it isn't selling, clear it out for something with better appeal.
We extend our thanks to the management and hosts at ShopNBC for welcoming us and to WJA-Twin Cities board member Sarah Kiecker, a ShopNBC employee, for arranging the tour.
Upcoming events:
T Lee to share insights about sustainable mining in Africa
Later this spring, T Lee, owner of T Lee Fine Designer Jewelry in Minneapolis, will share her passion for sustainable gemstone mining and other practices when she presents photos and stories from her recent gemstone-buying trip to Tanzania and Kenya. T worked directly with a gem broker and experienced, first hand, the connections in these communities from buyer to broker and broker to miners. T was fortunate to meet the miners and visit mines. She has sent the rough stones she purchased to several American custom gemstone cutters.
Visit her blog at www.tleefinedesignerjewelry.wordpress.com to follow the day-by-day account of her trip.
T serves as the Education and Ethics Mentor Committee chair on the Twin Cities Chapter Board. She is initiating round table discussions about consumers' increased interest in sustainability, "green" practices, and worldwide mining conditions.
T Lee (far left), owner of T Lee Fine Designer Jewelry in Minneapolis, interviewed Shamsa Diwani (second from left), secretary general of the Tanzania Women Miners Association. They discussed women's roles in the mining industry. Look for a transcript of that interview on T's blog, www.tleefinedesignerjewelry.wordpress.com Next to Shamsa are her assistant Maria; Roger Dery of Spectral Gems; Peter Torraca of PT Gems; Steve Wallner of Westview Gems and Kim Yanke of Yanke Designs.

WASHINGTON, DC
The Washington DC Chapter continues its roster of exciting programs for 2011. At press time, the chapter was gearing up for a March 30 program called "Glittering Conscience: Transparency and Beneficiation in the Jewelry Space. Wear Your Consience," with Wade Watson.
Wade Watson is a social entrepreneur who got started in the socially-responsible aspect of the jewelry industry with his travels to Sierra Leone, the country that's been at the heart of the conflict diamond crisis. His desire to give back led to the creation of Ruff and Cut, a conflict-free jewelry company whose sourcing and manufacturing processes are transparent, and that gives 10% of its wholesale cost to nonprofits working to better the lives of the mining communities in developing nations. Contact Alexan Cerna, alexan@alexanfinejewelry.com.
On April 21, Cindy Edelstein of Jewelers Resource Bureau will present "Social Media 101 for Jewelers," presenting all the basics everyone needs to know to tweet, Facebook, and more. Prior to the event, she will offer private consultations. Contact Liz Georges-Emerich and egeorges@cox.net.
On Sunday June 12th, from 12:30 - 4:00 p.m., at the Hillwood Estate Museum & Gardens, there will be a lecture by Curator Liana Pardes, of Ms. Post's Jewelry Collection including Cartier, Harry Winston, and Faberge eggs. The event includes the jewelry lecture, a guided house and garden tour and afternoon tea at the Hillwood Cafe from 3:00 - 4:00. A traditional high tea menu will be served.
Coming up later this year, Richard Hoff, of Peace Jewellers in Baltimore, MD, will present his wide collection of 19th and 20th century jewelry distinguished by unusual organic materials. Hoff's passion for this specific era in jewelry was sparked twenty years ago, while repairing an antique Shriners' pendant that contained a worn-out cat's claw that needed replacing. He became intrigued by the wide variety of organic materials used historically in jewelry.
Hair, claws, teeth, and bone were all used in memorial jewelry. A departed loved one's elaborately braided lock of hair becomes part of a necklace or a tiger claw mounted in gold commemorates a hunting trip. Items such as these became an obsession for Hoff, and with careful sleuthing a collection was born. He now owns well over a hundred pieces. He looks forward to sharing this fascinating side of jewelry with you, through slides and hands-on examination. |
