He Is Enough = Great Gain!
Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. – 1 Timothy 4:7b-8
Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. – 1 Timothy 6:6-7
How much is enough? I don’t know about you, but I can struggle with a scarcity mindset. I may feel there is not enough time, energy, or resources which increases my anxiety and drains my joy. Discontentment’s ugly root is ultimately a worship issue. I value or worship comfort and convenience over contentment with God alone. Godliness is formed from two words: God and worship. It is a life totally devoted to God. Godliness reflects the characteristics of our covenant God in the context of the community. It is aligning our hearts and lives with the values of the King. It is godly conduct for the sake of the gospel—a life lived with our chief end in mind: to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
Godliness will always stand out in this always-craving-for-more, corrosive culture. We are called to be holy, which means we will be set apart and different than those around us. Godly people are praying people. Our gratitude for Christ's redemptive work ought to lead to godly prayers overflowing into godly lives and hearts. We can’t summon up godliness; this is a work of the Spirit. We have to train like a spiritual athlete. With every step of our training regimen in the Word, we see and believe He is enough! His grace is sufficient—enough for whatever you or I may face today or tomorrow. And this training in godliness is not just for personal gain, but it is a great gain for everyone in your covenant community, because it is a treasure that lasts for eternity. When we unpack the content of the gospel in the context of community, we experience the lasting fruit of godliness today, tomorrow, and every step of the way until we get Home.
Great gain? — You better believe it!
