Conscience-Driven Ethical Leadership

What: January Women's Network Luncheon
When: Thursday, January 19
Where: 120 E Nifong Blvd Ste 104

Presenting Sponsor Riback/DKB
Welcome Sponsor Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Missouri

Join Women's Network as we welcome Dan Hesse, former Spring CEO, who believes conscience-driven ethical leadership is paramount, and business leadership is a vocation akin to teaching, public service, the clergy or parenting. Given a business leader's impact on employees, customers, shareholders, suppliers and the communities the company serves, he supports the growing movement toward maximizing stakeholder-value vs. the more limited shareholder-value. Sometimes this means starting over. An example of this is how the Kansas City Royals took a long-term view to win the recent World Championship by rebuilding their farm system from the ground-up. It meant years of losses while the talent was drafted and developed, similar to a telecom company like Sprint ripping out and replacing its old, disjointed networks with a new, integrated modern network, but these short-term sacrifices lead to more success long-term.

Advanced registration  is appreciated. Online registration is $15 for Women's Network members and $18 for guests until Tuesday, January 17. Cost after the registration  deadline  and at the door will be $18 for Women's Network member and $21 for guests.

One Recipient Receives Women's Network Ron Marley Scholarship for the 2017 Leadership Columbia Program

Congratulations to Elizabeth Herrera, Executive Director of True North of Columbia for being selected as the Women's Network Ron Marley Scholarship recipient for the upcoming Leadership Columbia Class of 2017!

Ron was a Shelter Insurance agent here in Columbia who was very active in the community and the Chamber of Commerce. He truly understood the power of networking and once he discovered what Women's Network had to offer - he had the courage to become our first male member. Unfortunately, Ron along with his wife Sharon and two of his three children were tragically taken from us in a car accident in 1997. In his honor, Women's Network established a scholarship to be able to send two of our members to the Chamber of Commerce Leadership Columbia program.

Congratulations to Elizabeth and thank you for representing Women's Network in the Leadership Columbia program!
Committee Spotlight: Marketing & Communications

The Marketing and Communications Committee is an active committee that meets second Tuesday of every month at 12 p.m. The purpose of this committee is to increase awareness and knowledge of Women's Network through the publication and promotion of special activities, newsworthy items, and member recognition. The committee also supports other  committees with any communications-related initiatives.

A variety of mediums are used by the committee to provide information to the members including:
  • Monthly Women's Network Newsletter
  • Women's Network Brochures
  • Annual Membership Directory
  • Women's Network Website
  • Women's Network Social Media pages
This year, the Marketing and Communications committee would like to add an external marketing component to the Women's Network marketing plan to spread the word about Women's Network throughout the community. If you are interested or have ideas, please join us!

Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Officer 101: Unconscious Mistakes Women Make That Sabotage Their Careers

If you've seen Grey's Anatomy, Scandal or Getting Away With Murder on ABC, you are already familiar with Miss Shonda Rhimes. The single-by-choice mother of three is a not only a writer and producer of some of the most highly rated shows on television, but she's also, as she describes herself, a first, only, different. What she is referring to is that fact that Rhimes is the first and only black, female, mid-40's producer to ever find success in the prime time television market. So how does a mere mortal manage to own Thursday night television with three hit TV shows, raise three young girls as a single mom and lose 100 pounds in the process? It turns out Shonda gets this question a lot, so this self-proclaimed recluse chose to answer the masses by penning a book that is now on the top of many must-read lists, and for great reason.

"Lucky implies I didn't do anything. Lucky implies something was given to me. Lucky implies that I was handed something I did not earn, that I did not work hard for. Gentle reader, may you never be lucky. I am not lucky. You know what I am?...
