On February 19, 1968, Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood debuted on Public Television. Fred Rogers wore zip up sweaters and sneakers and talked about feelings and make-believe. He was nerdy and his songs were corny, but we liked him just the way he was.
He taught us that whether you are young or young at heart, we can all be good neighbors and make our neighborhoods better simply by reaching out and treating others, and ourselves, with decency, kindness and honesty.
It may be fifty seven years ago today that Mr. Rogers made his way into American homes and hearts, but the lessons and messages he promoted then are just as relevant now. Maybe more than ever.
