One of the most common questions we receive from couples thinking about mediation is, “how long is this going to take?”

While that is a completely reasonable question, it’s not something we can typically answer before the process starts. Many factors impact how many mediation sessions are needed and the amount of time needed between sessions.

In this month’s article, we break down the mediation process for you, discuss the factors that will impact how long the process will take, and the role that a mediation consulting lawyer will play to help the process move more smoothly.

How Long Does Divorce Mediation Take in NY?
Divorce mediation is an individualized process that doesn’t conform to a one-size-fits-all mold. Mediation may require two sessions or ten sessions spread out over several months, depending on:

  • The type of issues the separating couple needs to resolve
  • The willingness of both spouses to cooperate
  • The experience, skill, and strategy of the mediators
  • How long does each session last

Does mediation always work?

Occasionally, mediation may fail, especially if one or both spouses are unwilling to compromise or make unreasonable demands. However, in almost all cases, mediation helps divorcing couples reduce friction and come up with solutions that work for both sides.
