Kiln Drying Seminar
October 24 – 28, 2022
The UBC Centre for Advanced Wood Processing (CAWP) will be hosting a 5-day Kiln Drying Seminar. This is a comprehensive, hands-on introduction to drying technology taught from a practical, real-life perspective and backed with solid explanations into the scientific background of drying.
This highly-regarded workshop discusses the key processes and concepts involved in drying wood. Beginning with wood properties and moisture movement, students become familiar with kiln design considerations, drying schedules and kiln loading considerations. Other topics include drying with air, drying degrade, lumber storage and handling, control systems and power plants.

WMC Management Skills Training Program
WMC Management Skills Training provides on-line learning modules specifically developed for business managers and owners of value-added wood products companies. These custom-developed modules include numerous case studies and industry examples and are designed to upgrade the managerial skills of existing managers, entrepreneurs, supervisors and management-track employees.
These are not academic courses and the skills learned can be applied immediately to the work place. Each part time course is led by a tutor with extensive industry experience.

BC Timber Building Tour

The Centre for Advanced Wood Processing (CAWP) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in collaboration with the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) is pleased to announce the British Columbia Timber Building and Technical Tour to showcase leading manufacturers of mass-timber building components, prefabricated energy efficient homes, and modular building systems fabricators.
The UBC CAWP has been leading tours to Europe for over 15 years. This tour is an opportunity for participants to visit some of BC’s leading mass-timber building component and prefabricated building systems manufacturers, many of whom have attended our past tours to Europe and have adopted and implemented principles and technologies into their manufacturing practices.
These companies provide building solutions to meet the sustainability and green building requirements of advanced energy efficient materials, and mass-timber products for single family, multi-family, and non-residential construction.

Export Advisory Service
BC Wood is proud to launch a new advanced exporting program focused on helping BC wood product companies that have completed the Export Readiness Training Program or are already exporting outside of Canada. All services are performed remotely and virtually at times that best suit the company’s availability and only require a time commitment ranging from 1-4 hours depending on the service.
Introductory Exporting Advisory Service:
Even having completed a comprehensive export training program, many companies still experience challenges with finding critical market research, completing an Export Plan, or negotiating initial shipping contracts with new customers.
As part of the introductory service, Exportspark will engage with company executives or owners to review issues, questions, or draft Export Plans and provide recommendations. The services will consist of a short review of the company’s product, an initial call to review what is required with a second call to review final recommendations or suggestions.
Advanced Exporting Advisory Service:
Even for companies that are export ready or currently exporting to the US, it is still vital to create a solid strategy and an action plan for entry into any new market. For BC Wood members planning on meeting with buyers from these new markets at upcoming events, simply having something to sell won’t be enough for success.
Exportspark will work together with company executives or owners to review the company’s marketing & product, validate best fit markets, develop a strategic plan for market entry along with an HR plan and review best practices around meeting with specific buyers at upcoming BC Wood events.

IDS Vancouver Returns Live & In-person September 22-25, 2022 at the Vancouver Convention Centre West!
IDS Vancouver attracts thousands of attendees over 3.5 days at the Vancouver Convention Centre West. This includes 7,050 guests to the Party on Opening Night; 7,500 designers, architects, buyers, builders/developers and other industry professionals during Trade Day; and an additional 24,000 consumers interested in design, on the weekend.
This event is specifically targeted for designers, architects, buyers/developers and other industry professionals attend Trade Day for free. Over 20,000 avid design enthusiasts visit IDS Vancouver to source for design products and services on the public days.

BC Wood at the AFN and the Return of In-person Events
As we are busy preparing for this year’s Global Buyers Mission in Whistler, I was thinking on how nice it will be to once again see everyone in person and reconnect. Last week, BC Wood and 6 member companies got to meet in person and participate in the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Circle of Trade event in Vancouver. This event provided an excellent opportunity to meet with representatives from Indigenous and First Nations communities from across Canada. There were lots of discussions between members and communities around forestry, housing, manufacturing, and numerous other important issues.
We even had a special guest stop by to meet with our exhibitors. The billionaire and philanthropist Mr. Jimmy Pattinson. Jimmy, who is still going strong at the young age of 93, met with our manufacturers and seemed keenly interested in the value-added wood products sector. Like the upcoming GBM, the AFN Circle of Trade is an important and valuable event in large part because it is live and in person. The value that we place on meeting someone face to face cannot be underestimated and I’m looking forward to seeing you all soon in Whistler.

This innovative four-story project demonstrates what is possible with mass timber construction. Located in Vancouver, BC Canada, and built on a narrow mid-block site with only a 7.54-metre wide street frontage, this commercial project has an all-timber structure as the cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels form the floors, walls and roof. It also features new approaches to insulative cross-laminated timber (CLT) assemblies and damage-resistant seismic design.

The North American Wholesale Lumber Association (NAWLA) was founded 127 years ago and is comprised of three unique groups: Wholesalers, Manufacturers and Service Affiliates. Wholesalers make up most of the membership, followed by manufacturers such as BC wood mills and Service Affiliates that cover everything from logistics to HR and IT services. Since 1996, the association has hosted an annual trade show called the Traders Market, which focuses almost exclusively on the lumber supply chain. The next Traders Market will be held this November 9-11th in Phoenix, Arizona.

Forestry Innovation Investment is seeking Expressions of Interest as Part of the 3rd Call for the Mass Timber Demonstration Program (MTDP or Program).

The Program will dedicate $2M to advance mass timber innovation.
Successful applicants may be eligible to receive up to $500,000 towards the incremental costs in the design and construction of buildings that showcase emerging or new mass timber or mass timber hybrid building systems and construction processes.
In an effort to promote the new funding opportunity to our target audience, we are requesting your support by sharing information regarding the MTDP through an email to your members, an announcement on your social media accounts, a section in an upcoming newsletter, or a mention on your website. Please let us know if you can support us with our outreach efforts.
The program will support the expansion of mass timber use in British Columbia and jobs and employment recovery in the design, engineering, construction, and product manufacturing sectors. The Beauty of Wood Reunites Randy Bachman with his Beloved Guitar

As you may have seen in the news, Randy Bachman recently made a pilgrimage to Japan to be reunited with his Gretsch guitar, which was stolen from his Toronto hotel room in 1977. Bachman had searched for it ever since with no luck, but in an amazing turn of fate in an antique guitar shop in Daikanyama (which is just a five-minute walk from the BC Wood Tokyo Office), it was bought at a guitar auction in Dallas, Texas, not knowing it had been stolen, and then sold it to the Japanese musician TAKESHI in 2014. TAKESHI of course had no idea who the previous owners might have been, but he felt it was a special guitar as soon as he picked it up in the store. He loved his new guitar so much that he used it to write his music and perform. |
