After the last GBM, it was determined that the most productive time was spent in the pre-scheduled face-to-face video meetings. Therefore, the format for this coming GBM will be solely based on B2B Building Connections* meeting schedules. Buyers and Mission Leaders will have advanced access to the online company promotional materials, to facilitate the scheduling of meetings that will take place during the live events. Think you got a sticky idea? Join us for our first ever Pitch Night
|
|
At TWIG we are investing our time into creating connections for those in the industry who are starting up. Our group includes independent or two-person operations seeking to find the right support and connections to move projects to the next step. It's amazing when 15 of these people are in a room together, navigating similar challenges in their development process, and can share resources and connections. Over the years at TWIG we have seen the value of creating this space for people to connect, to discover, and to be inspired by others who are working in wood. As Monty from Calmura walls spoke about in our recent Monthly event, the innovation process is moved forward step by step, with a lot of experiments, and testing is done along the way. No one individual's steps towards innovation are the same, and so having a network of connections can help you manage the challenges you could face in developing an idea.
As we look ahead to in-person TWIG events and plan towards community get-togethers, we wanted to preview one of the series we are planning. We wanted to give people a place to openly share an idea and get real-time input and feedback, from a broad base of people working in a wood-related industry. Pitch Night invites people with a concept, a sketch, or a prototype to share with the group their idea, the story behind it, and where they are in the process. Developing an idea is not a manufactured process, but an iterative process and one that is nurtured over time, with a balance of inputs and outputs that create growth. For those pitching, the input you will get might be what you need to inspire and inform the next stage of actions. In our world today we face rising challenges affected by climate, energy, conversation, and human development. We need to see more minds investing time in the use of forest-based resources, and combining ideas in different ways.
Let us know by email if you have an idea you want to present and we will spend 15 minutes talking about it together.
Information on our events can be seen at twigbc.ca/monthly. To get updated information directly, sign up for the mailing list on the website and/or follow TWIG on LinkedIn.

As parts of the world continue re-opening after their battles with COVID-19, the opening ceremonies for the Tokyo Olympics will be held on July 23rd. In the aftermath of the Great Tohoku Earthquake of 2011, they were originally planned as the “reconstruction Olympics” to show the region’s recovery. Of course, COVID-19 forced their postponement to 2021 and also re-framed their meaning in the context of humanity’s struggle with the pandemic. Unfortunately, continuing surges in many parts of the world as well as Japan’s own slow vaccination roll-out means that a “mission accomplished” declaration is not yet in sight. Furthermore, the barring of spectators from the stands and the cancellation of Olympic related public events have left many in Japan wondering what the legacy of these games will be.
One of the intended legacies that will actually be realized is the high-profile promotion of wood used in the Olympic facilities. The new USD$1.4 billion 68,000 seat national stadium was designed by the wood loving, Japanese rock-star architect Kengo Kuma. Approximately 2,000m3 of wood was sourced from all 47 of Japan’s prefectures to be used in the stadium’s roof assembly and interior. However, it was not just the centrepiece of the Olympics that received the wood treatment. There are many others including the Ariake Gymnastic Centre used 2,200m2 to create what is said to be one of the largest wood roof structures in the world, while the expansive Village Plaza in the athlete’s village was constructed with traditional Japanese construction methods using domestic larch, cedar, and cypress.

US Program: Looking Forward
A few comments suggestions and ideas.
I’m sure that I am like most of you in wanting to put this pandemic far in the rear-view mirror. The past 16 months has certainly been a challenge from both a personal and a business perspective and here is hoping that we will be able to get back to some sense of normalcy over the next few months.
With this in mind, we have been actively planning our US market development activities heading into the fall of this year. We are going under the premise that fully vaccinated folks will be able to travel back and forth between the US Canada border by October. Upcoming events that we are planning on participating “live and in-person” include; two Bond Events for both the custom home and interiors communities, the NAWLA Traders Market for the remanufacturing sector, and a Pro-CONNECT event for manufacturers that target the multi-family sector. We are exploring the possibility that if an attendee is not wanting to participate in person, we may be able to offer a hybrid option, where direct pre-set meetings between buyers and suppliers will take place online. We are working with our trade event partners to develop this alternative and will review further in an upcoming Wood Connections article.
If you are interested in these upcoming events this fall either live or online, please feel free to reach out to me at dfarley@bcwood.com. In the meantime, I hope you get some time to get out and enjoy your summer.

Is Mass Timber the Silver Bullet?
Ian MacNeill
Is mass timber the shot in the arm needed before commodity prices correct and the BC forest sector faces a tougher reality?
It certainly has momentum. Thanks to an evolution in the product's development and evolving building code regulations allowing taller building structures, mass timber appears to be coming into its own. Its increasing popularity as a building material of choice by architects and developers is an indication that there are value-added success stories in British Columbia. The provincial government is leading the public relation charge, pointing to mass timber as an example of how its "wood first" initiate is bearing fruits.

Forestry Innovation Investment (FII) India is leveraging this growing trend by targeting architects, interior designers, builders and developers to position B.C.’s sustainably sourced, certified wood species as the ideal products to achieve biophilic designs.

Mass timber report shows projects reaching new heights across Canada
Don Procter
Mass timber has come a long way since the first two Canadian plants in Quebec and B.C. established cross-laminated timber production lines more than a decade ago.
A recent report produced by the federal government, The State of the Mass Timber Industry in Canada (SMTC) in 2021, displays through an interactive map close to 500 under construction or completed mass timber projects from 2007 to 2019 for a total of 16 million square feet. In that time, domestic manufacturing has soared with 21 facilities in production by 2019.
