TWIG Seed night @ Brent Comber Originals
Twig BC | info@twicbc.ca

When: Thursday, March 16th, 6:00 - 8:30 pm

For the next edition of Seed Night, we head to North Vancouver to visit the shop of Brent Comber, where his unique array of wood sculptures and furniture pieces are manufactured. For decades now, Brent has been shaping and exploring forms and objects from local materials which can now be found all over the world in private residences, public spaces and other unique settings. The collection of Brent's work evolves from the material he discovers through visits to locations throughout British Columbia and his connections to local mills, loggers and suppliers.

Brent loves to work at scale, with the majority of his pieces being made from large sections of wood, or a combination of smaller sections assembled to form impressive sculptural works. The evolution of his work comes hand in hand with the methods he uses to create, as his processes are tailor-made to produce the ideas he comes up with. From chainsaws and router jigs to custom equipment and pure manual labour, he and his team have been able to craft works of art that are distinct to the Pacific Northwest and have earned him a reputation worldwide.

The tour will start at the shop and then we will make our way over to Wildeye brewing, where Brent will host a Q & A and we can socialize with other guests on the tour.
Wood First Wednesday
Twig BC | info@twicbc.ca

Wood-First-Wednesday continues to be a growing success at TWIG, that was sparked after the British Columbia Timber Building Tour and some initiative from Will Millard who works at Naikoon Contracting. After 15 events, the monthly get together keeps growing and attracting more people living and working in the Vancouver area, joining for a beer and some conversation around wood. The real impact of this event is its informal nature which generates unexpected interactions and new connections between the people who attend. We don’t know for sure what exactly goes on after the events, but we know our attendees are taking action and following up based on conversations that took place at WFW.

The event is simple. On the first Wednesday of each month we meet at a brewery from 6:00-8:30, sit down at a table and share stories from our journeys and careers in wood. It’s a place to invite those people you know who are seeking a community, contacts and connections to support their goals and projects in wood. You can be sure that at these events there is someone you’re going to meet that you didn't know before, and that they have something to offer that might support you in your work. Just this last month we launched our first edition of WFW in Victoria with the help of Donna Shaw from Live Edge Design and Mike Randall from Mike Randall Design, and we are excited about this event happening in multiple locations at once!

To keep in touch about the events, sign up for the TWIG mailing list or follow our Wood-First-Wednesday page with the schedule. Our next event in Vancouver is at Faculty Brewing on April 5th, with the event in Victoria to be posted soon.

Want to host a Wood-First-Wednesday in your community? Let us know and we would be happy to get you started!
Design for Manufacturing and Assembly Workshop
Jason Chiu | jason.chiu@ubc.ca

The UBC Centre for Advanced Wood  Processing (CAWP) in collaboration with the UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA) held its inaugural 3-day hands-on Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) workshop in early February.  This sold out workshops was led by UBC faculty and industry experts from the mass timber design, engineering, fabrication and installation community to discuss lessons learned in mass timber construction. Participants took part in a design/build process and were guided through the process of designing mass-timber projects with the consideration of manufacturing technologies.

One of the key takeaways that were echoed by many of the presenters in this workshop was the importance of front-end collaboration with trades, specifiers, architects and engineers who are required to execute a project. By engaging all the necessary individuals into the conversations early on and drawing on experience, this information can make its way downstream to reduce costs on the installation, increase accuracy, and reduce time and waste throughout the construction process. The technology and innovations used in the DFMA process span the whole cycle of production, from software simulation and manufacturing, to site logistics and hardware used in the installation of Mass Timber structures. With new developments in Mass Timber there are opportunities for innovation and the biggest impact seems to come from integrating the right people in the process at the right time.

Want to attend the next DFMA workshop? UBC CAWP already has a waitlist and is planning for another session. Please email Jason Chiu at jason.chiu@ubc.ca to be notified on the next workshop schedule.
BC Wood Program Updates
BC Wood Export Training Program - International Finance
Randi Walker | rwalker@bcwood.com

One of the more challenging aspects of exporting is understanding the financial aspects of international sales, billing, credit, insurance and collecting payments. Most financial topics are challenging enough in domestic markets, but now they involve customers and partners outside of Canada.

The final course in BC Wood's Export Training Certificate Program is International Finance, where new or current exporters looking at expanding into new markets learn about the most common aspects of export financing.

Topics covered include currency conversion and hedging, obtaining credit insurance, Letters of Credit and other payment instruments, best practices around billing and providing credit to new partners, and funding available to Canadian exporters for expansion.

Join BC Wood and guest speakers from EDC and the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service as they outline all of the various topics around financing in export markets.

Cost: $99 per individual session

Register here. Please email rwalker@bcwood.com for more details and information or for discount pricing on multiple attendee registrations.
US Market Update: Hawaii Building Connections Mission
Dave Farley | dfarley@bcwood.com

BC Wood and member companies just returned from a successful Building Connections mission and meetings event in the State of Hawaii. The event was capped off with an Aloha Friday networking event on the Big Island where over 45 builders, architects and project managers from the Kona region gathered to meet and network with the 6 member companies participating.  Overall a very fun, informative and solid sales lead generating mission.

As an example of the value of a strategic approach to this market, the group had the pleasure of touring the new One Hotel project in Princeville Hawaii. This stunning project is situated on the idyllic Honolai Bay with gorgeous views of the ocean and surrounding mountains. We first heard of this project at the 2019 Building Connections at the GBM in Whistler, where we met with the invited folks from Layton Construction. Fast forward to today and we had the pleasure of seeing the beautiful work our member company Fraserwood Industries delivered. The entrance to the hotel, the “Porte Cochere” or covered vehicle entrance, was all manufactured by Fraserwood on site in Squamish, then shipped to Kauai for assembly at the One Hotel. All this took place during the Pandemic, but they managed to complete the project and as you can see, the finished product is very impressive.
Nikkei Messe 2023 Show Report
Jim Ivanoff | ivanoff@bcwood.jp

The 2023 Nikkei Architectural and Construction Materials Show was held as apart of Nikkei Messe from February 28th to March 3rd at Tokyo Big Sight. This has been the biggest construction industry trade show in Japan, covering everything from lumber to finished products, and as this was the first edition since 2019 that was held without restrictions, there were high expectations. Prior to COVID, this show welcomed over 200,000 visitors over its four days and with a total of 192,530 this year the attendance nearly matched those figures. Compared to 2022, the number of visitors increased by 77% and you could feel the great improvement in energy on the show floor. The number of exhibitors also increased so there more products for visitors to review.

This also marked the first time since 2019 that overseas exhibitors were able to participate directly as Japan’s borders only reopened in October of last year. As a result, BC Wood was able to welcome back members to our pavilion. We once again organized the Canadian pavilion, including booths for members as well as our Canada Wood partners. Throughout the show, our area was busy and our members were able to benefit from this great traffic with a lot of solid inquiries. Nikkei attracts large numbers of architects and designers working on commercial projects, so it was a great event to promote high value wood products and finishing materials.
