TWIG Seed Night
Twig BC | info@twigbc.ca
May 31, 6:00-8:00pm
For the next edition of Seed Night, we head for a tour to North Vancouver to visit the shop Tantalus Design founded in 2012 by brothers Shawn and James Kay. Their company has gained notoriety by creating their Serratus pepper mill, a wood-based pepper grinder that meticulously hides the mechanisms and structure within. They have developed a customized shop with modified machinery to manufacture this product specifically, as well they produce a line of solid wood door pulls and hardware. These guys have an obsession with wood, and their products are made from a range of species both local and imported and some you can't find at your standard lumber store. They collect and stock their own material for their products and at times are buying entire logs in order to get the material they need, and the excess they sell to customers seeking out wood for projects.
"Our process is driven by experimentation, meticulous attention to detail, and a love of the materials we work with."
Shawn Kay is an industrial designer with more than a decade of experience building custom homes. Shawn holds a degree in Environmental Design from the UBC School of Architecture.
James Kay’s background is in materials science and industrial fabrication. He has a BASc in Integrated Engineering and a PhD in Materials Engineering from the University of British Columbia. James also teaches engineering design at Capilano University.

Wood First Wednesday
Twig BC | info@twicbc.ca
June 7, 6:00-8:30
BREWHALL @ 97 East 2nd Ave.
Our WFW events continue as per usual on the first Wednesday of each month at a local brewery in Vancouver. Over the past year and a half, we have been bouncing between East Van and the Main Street breweries to explore unique spaces and environments that have been created to share these craft beverages with the community. For the most part, all of these spaces have been built with wood features and in some cases, the owners have re-used materials from the renovations into tables and other interior features. At this point we have only returned to a brewery once, and this month we head to BREWHALL. Stay in touch with these monthly events at twigbc.ca/wood-first-wednesday/.

TWIG Vancouver Island Wood Network
Twig BC | info@twicbc.ca
What started as an informal gathering of a Wood-First-Wednesday event in Victoria at Craft Brewery, coordinated with the help of Donna Shaw of Live Edge Design and Mike Randall, has evolved into something more. The first event proved that there was an eagerness to create a platform on Vancouver Island for wood professionals to connect. Vancouver Island has a large number of shops, artisans, suppliers and manufacturers, but is missing the events and opportunities where these people can connect on the island. Marc deMontigny from Toolpath Design has stepped in to help realize future activities so stay in touch and follow along at twigbc.ca/viwn/ for future events.

From there we moved to Niseko in Hokkaido to host an intimate in-person only session for the international developers based there. Mass Timber Solutions for Local Governments
SFU Renewable Cities
Mass timber is part of a worldwide construction shift towards prefabrication and offsite construction. Prefabricated buildings made from sustainable sourced mass timber are a huge environmental and economic opportunity for B.C. and generate a triple win of low-carbon buildings, secure jobs and forest sector growth.
Mass timber buildings (7-12 stories), rare in B.C. but growing and important for densification and livability, are well suited for mass timber construction. They help support significant embodied carbon reductions, thriving communities and affordable housing. B.C. has the resources and expertise to lead this construction category and, as of 2019, allows mass timber buildings up to 12 stories within some early-adopter jurisdictions. Yet uptake remains low for many reasons, including policy/regulatory barriers and supply/demand dynamics.

10-story Wood Building Passes Earthquake Test
KPBS
The building swayed as it would have in the 1999 Jiji earthquake in Taiwan. That magnitude 7.7 quake killed more than 2,000 people. Buildings made of steel and concrete were destroyed.
But the wood-framed high rise, built recently on UC San Diego’s Scripps Ranch shake table, showed no visible damage.

Is Wood Strong Enough to Make a Bicycle Frame?
Yanko Design
If wood is strong enough for buildings and furniture, why not use it for bicycles too? That’s pretty much the thought process that led Masateru Yasuda to design the Moccle, a bicycle that relies on the flexible yet sturdy properties of bent plywood sheets.

Tree-planting Drones Seed the Dangerous Places Where Human Planters Can’t Tread
The Globe and Mail
Planting trees in places scorched by forest fire can help its ecosystems recover and restore its capacity to capture carbon. But when tree planters are called in to do the job, Ms. DeGraff said they can sometimes be met by this deathly concoction of conditions.
But emerging technology provides alternatives. Where a human might feel unsafe, tree-planting drones can fly safely above.
