Timber is Top of the Class
David Wylie | Journal of Commerce

Located 70 kilometres east of Vancouver in the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford Senior Secondary School features wood as part of a major rehabilitation and replacement project.

Central to its design, and crowning the school's three-storey structure, is an intricate and  impressive timber rotunda roof built of exposed  glue-laminated timber and wood decking. School  principal and educator Rob Comeau shares how  wood is making the school a place where students  feel at home, whether they're enjoying a piano  concert in the rotunda or getting hands-on  experience building a tiny wood house as part  of their green technology program.

Erin Robinson | [email protected]

The Forestry Innovation Centre received the Wood Works Award at UBCM. The annual Wood Design Award of BC led by the Canadian Wood Council, aimed to honor excellence in wood-based projects and to recognize the people and organizations that are pioneering and achieving this objective.

Located on the second floor of City Hall in Quesnel, the Forestry Innovation Centre was completed in July 2019 and will celebrate its grand opening in September 2019. The goal of the Forestry Innovation Centre is to showcase all of the various local wood products that are manufactured in Quesnel, alongside research and development in innovative local natural resource management and manufacturing practices.

The Centre has 3 permanent offices and space for 5 itinerant researchers, as well as a board room.  The space has been designed as a flexible work environment to foster innovation and collaboration, as well as showcase locally made structural and finishing wood products; local artisan furniture; and art installations. There is also an interpretive centre that disseminates knowledge about landscape level management, fuel management and the future of forestry.

The Forestry Innovation Centre is a display of local milling capabilities. The feature wall in the entrance was made with multi-colour shiplap, produced by C & C Wood Products, along with a 3D wood display created by local artist Aaron Harder of Conquest Projects.  The Centre features various displays of wood products including structural, finishing and artisan displays to showcase what is possible with the innovative use of wood.

Daily Sales Networking: The Game Changer
Neil Godin | [email protected]

Looking to increase sales and reduce hills and valleys? Consider Daily Sales Networking.
This month I want to tell you about a program that has the power to dramatically increase your sales - and sharply reduce the "hills and valleys" in your business. I call the program Daily Sales Networking. Like most of the strategies I share, this one was developed in my hands-on work with marketing and sales clients - and then refined over the years. Here are the highlights...

The program in a nutshell

Daily sales networking simply involves making outbound calls - to prospective customers, and to sources of leads, referrals and introductions to prospective customers - on a daily basis. That last phrase, "on a daily basis," is the key to success. The idea is to make a minimum number of fresh, new outbound calls each and every business day - without exception. Using what we call our "Min-Max System" you establish the minimum number of calls that you commit (to yourself) to make each day (that's the "Min" part) and on days when that first call goes well, and you're on a roll - you keep on making calls - and take it to the "Max." (That's the "Max" part.)

USA Market Update
USA Trends from Bond Custom Homes
Dave Farley | [email protected]

A few comments , suggestions , and ideas ...

BC Wood, accompanied by Norelco Cabinets, Daizen Joinery, C&C Wood Products, and Brisco Manufacturing , recently attended the Bond Custom Home event in Tucson, Arizona . BC Industry had the opportunity to meet with architects, builders, and key decision makers in the custom and resort home sector from across the United States, with the majority being from the West Coast

Two trends arose throughout the event:

The first being that home sizes are shrinking, while the demand for quality products is rising. The day s of homes with a large footprint are behind us . Instead, buyers are now more interested in smaller footprint homes with top quality products .

The second trend of note is the continued interest in contemporary design i n the Mountain States T he heavy-to- wood design or "Mountain Contemporary " is the front runner , i ncorporating steel, glass and wood elements, in concert with one another

The show attracts a great number of architects and designers, especially ones working on commercial and hospitality related projects. Therefore, it is a great show to target Japan's booming inbound and resort sectors. It is also well attended by importers, distributors, and both residential and commercial builders.
