A Message from the Superintendent

Dear Woodburn Community,

As the 2021 - 2022 school year comes to a close, I want to tell you how incredibly proud I am of the members of our school community.

Tomorrow, Saturday, June 4, we will hold our first full whole group graduation ceremony since 2019. This year’s graduating class persevered through two years of a global pandemic and all the changes and challenges that came with it to reach this milestone. It’s an accomplishment many years in the making and an accomplishment that many have contributed to along the way.

We are inspired by our students for their commitment to learning, for their resilience and passion to learn, lead, and contribute, for having high expectations for their own learning, seeking support when needed, and persevering in achieving challenging goals. Our 2022 graduates have earned nearly $1.5 million in scholarships this year!

On Thursday, our graduating seniors took a moment to visit their elementary schools and middle schools. It was a day to celebrate our students’ graduation accomplishment, the culmination of their K-12 school experience and the closing of a chapter. It was an opportunity for seniors not not only to revisit staff and memories and to be celebrated, but to come full circle and inspire those students who are to follow. Our students dawned their caps and gowns and walked our elementary and middle school halls as symbols of inspiration as they are graduating, and opening a new chapter, ready to pursue college, career options, and success in life.

We are also inspired by our families for actively engaging in students’ learning through consistent support and partnership. We are inspired by our staff for leading through the challenges, for navigating uncharted experiences, for having high expectations for themselves and students, for learning continually, striving for innovation, collaborating to support the success of all students, and being the champions our students need and deserve. We are inspired by our community for providing support, pathways, and opportunities, recognizing that education is a foundation for a healthy community and supporting school learning initiatives. All are examples of how our core value of learning lives throughout our school and our community.

We draw the year to a close with a heartfelt thank you for the core values of accountability, civic responsibility, cultural diversity, equity, family and community partnerships, learning, multilingualism, and safety that our community has continually demonstrated. The strength, grace, love, resilience, learning, and leadership of this past year has been extraordinary. The 2021-22 chapter is closing but the experiences we’ve lived and learned through will make for an even stronger 2022-23 chapter that we’ve already started writing.

Have a wonderful and safe summer vacation! We’re eager to see you back for our first day of school on August 29!

Yours in service,

Juan Larios

Menstrual Dignity for Students Program

Menstrual products are now available in all bathrooms at our K- 12 schools in the Woodburn School District, as part of the Menstrual Dignity Act.

This year, the Oregon Legislature passed The Menstrual Dignity Act (HB 3294, 2021), in order to address an unmet need identified by students, school leaders, and medical and public health professionals over many years. Research has shown that one in four teens have missed class due to a lack of access to menstrual products and that this disproportionately impacts students of color, students experiencing disabilities, and students experiencing poverty. The program asserts that all menstruating students, regardless of gender, age, ability, or socioeconomic status have the opportunity for safe, dignified self-care (OAR 581-021-0587, OAR 581-021-090, OAR 581-021-0593, and OAR 581-021-0596).

School Safety Update

Care, Connection, and Education:  Our District is committed to not only the physical safety of our schools, but also the mental safety.  Safety starts with providing students and families access and support to help share, process, and learn.  Counselors, peer groups, and connections with staff help provide a safe avenue for students and families to share concerns and ask questions.  Oftentimes, this is the primary source of information related to safety concerns and we are grateful that our students and families feel safe reaching out to us.

Practice:  We have monthly safety drills and biannual emergency drills that help train staff and students on how to react when emergency situations arise.

Senior Walk Photos

Senior Walk

Senior Walk is a celebration in which soon-to-be graduates walk the hall of the nearby middle or elementary school as a way of demonstrating to younger students that hard work pays off. On Thursday, June 2nd, Woodburn High School seniors wore their caps and gowns and walked the halls of elementary and middle schools where they were cheered on by students and faculty. Some of our students chose to walk at the elementary and /or middle schools that they attended.

Russian Heritage Language Program Annual Event

Video

The Russian Festival with performances from students at Heritage Elementary is one of the most well-attended events of the year at Woodburn School District. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year students in the Russian Heritage Language Program were able to record their performances in their classrooms and combine them in a video that will be shared with our families. Our first Russian preschool classroom joined the festivities and presented a play and poems in Russian! Students in the program also learned about Russian cultural traditions, their heritage and engaged in creating their own handmade souvenirs. If you are interested in enrolling your child in the Russian Heritage Program for next year, please call Katya Huelsman at 503-981-2804.
