September 2024

From the Recreation Coordinator's Desk

This month's newsletter comes from your Recreation Coordinator, as our Director and baby are resting a bit. Jami will be back in the office on Monday, but in the meantime, Linda and I are holding down the fort.

Youth Basketball registration is now open! Please register your child as soon as possible for this incredibly popular program! Also very popular, Mr. K's afterschool program is now open for registration. This month we bring you a new program, Low Impact Cardio and Strength Training from Christa McAfee with Brighter Life Fitness! My Grown-Up and me is back after a summer break. Guitar Lessons have started up again. Please note that several of our adult fitness programs are offering a complimentary introduction class. You must be registered to attend these free classes. We hope you'll find something for everyone in our selection of programs.

Please join us at our September 11th Remembrance Ceremony at Hollow Park. A very moving tribute to those local citizens lost in the 2001 tragedy. Our ceremony will begin at 8:45am.

Since Halloween candy is already in the stores, it's time to start thinking about Trunk or Treat! Our "Trunker" application is available on our website. Please join us for a spooky good time!

As always, we are here to provide you with high quality programing and enjoyable events. Please call, email or stop by if you have any questions, suggestions, kudos, comments or ideas.

Bernard Rosenberg Memorial Award

Congratulations, Brendan and Wendy Reig on receiving the 2024 Bernard Rosenberg Award!

We at Parks & Recreation are very fortunate to have partnered with Brendan and Wendy Reig for several community events and know firsthand how committed they are to the community of Woodbury.

  •  They have successfully revived the Woodbury Fall Festival, which was a well-loved event that had not taken place for a few years.

  •  Brendan volunteered to be the Chairperson of the first Earth Day Festival that P&R has hosted. It was a tremendous responsibility which he took on willingly and enthusiastically. We knew from accepting the responsibility of hosting this event that we could not do it with our staff alone, so we were thrilled that Brendan and Wendy stepped up to take a huge part of the organizing and work that was involved in what turned out to be a very successful and well attended community event.

  •  Both Brendan and Wendy volunteered to be on our Memorial Day Parade Committee, which meets during the workday, so Brendan rearranged his work schedule to be at these meetings. Their contributions and suggestions helped make this year’s parade bigger and better attended than in the past several years.

  •  They have been generous with their time, helping us with events they aren’t officially involved in, providing extra hands and muscles for setting up, running things, and cleaning up.

  •  They have been generous with their monetary donations, paying for community event related expenses, anonymously sponsoring and donating without recognition.

  • In fact, we appreciate all they do so much, that this year’s first Annual Community Picnic was in their honor! (The picnic was Brendan’s idea, we just hijacked it!)

Trunkers Needed!

The calendar says it's still summer, but we're thinking ahead to give "Trunkers" plenty of time to plan!

We invite residents, local businesses, community and civic groups to join us at our annual Trunk or Treat on October 31! Here's your chance to get creative with some spooky and festive decorations, bewitch young treaters and possibly win a prize!

Please plan on bringing enough treats for 400 children. Parks and Recreation will supplement if need be.
