Dear Parents and Guardians
,
As the first trimester is winding down, the teachers are continuing to increase the level of rigor with the learning expectations for our students. Parents can support this gradual increase in rigor at home. Here is a reading challenge with your child! By reading more complex books, your child can learn new words, facts, and ideas.
They will also be exposed to more complicated plots and will grow as a reader.
Share these suggestions with your child:
- Knowing something about the topic or setting makes a tougher book easier to comprehend. If your child is reading a novel set in China, they could talk to someone who has been there or look up the country online (try a children's site like kids.nationalgeographic.com).
- Encourage your child to look at a simpler book on the same subject. A picture book biography about Harriet Tubman may help your child better understand a textbook chapter on the Civil Rights movement, for instance.
- Suggest that your child read complicated material with pencil and paper in hand. They can jot down questions, words to look up, or facts they want to learn more about.
These suggestions will support your child's learning and it can prepare them for some of the assessments they have to take in school.
Thank you for another great week at Woodbury Elementary School!
Always believe!!

Did you know...
11/9
Shaker Heights High School offers several college courses
at Shaker Heights High School, taught by Shaker teachers.
We refer to these as “Partnership” classes. Students received dual-credit for each course, the same as if they were taken on a college campus. In 2018/19, we offer courses from Tri-C and Kenyon College in College Composition, Math, History, and Art. Students must apply and be accepted to the college, and they may choose these courses if they satisfy the college’s requirements.
At some colleges, there is still time to apply to participate in CCP during Spring 2019. If your student is interested in applying for Spring semester, please have them see Gabrielle Perrin, CCP Coordinator in the School Counseling department, or contact at
[email protected]
