Dear Woodhavenites and friends,
By the time you read this, my family and I will likely be on the road headed to Tennessee for Spring Break with my mother-in-law. I'm looking forward to exploring nature in the Smoky Mountain National Park. But, just because the pastor is away don't take the liberty to skip Sunday worship because we have an incredible service honoring the Gifts of Women!
I had the opportunity to meet with some wonderful people here at the church. Lemuel Garcia, who is the PCUSA Ministry Engagement Advisor for the South Region, Bill Rutherford, who is the President of the board for Pan American Presbyterian School, and Rev. Princeton Abara, who is the pastor of a Nigerian fellowship nested in first Dallas. We had a dynamic conversation about ministry and I am being recommended to serve on their board.

Last weekend, Pastor Martin and I went to St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church in Richardson to participate in the ordination and installation of our very own member, Joanna Kim. Betty Osae and Grace Kakrada also joined in for the celebration. It was a beautiful service with great music, and we are so proud of Joanna and the good ministry she will do there as their interim pastor during this time of transition.

We had a lovely Ash Wednesday service that was also live streamed on YouTube if you missed it. We talked about fasting as a way to prepare your heart during Lent. So here are two questions for us to consider:
- What are spiritual practices of fasting and resting that our church can make space for during Lent?
- What kind of fasting is God calling us to practice this Lenten season? Can we offer different options for fasting that emphasize communal liberation rather than mere self-denial?
Lenten Blessings,
Shane

Worshipful Work Sunday
March 30, Hancock Hall

Some newer Woodhaven members may not be familiar with noteworthy history about the Presbyterian National Evangelical Synod of Syria & Lebanon (NESSL) which we have supported since 2013. NESSL has the only women pastors ever ordained in the history of the Middle East, and among all Arabs. On February 26, 2017, the NESSL Presbyterian Church in Tripoli, Lebanon, ordained the Rev. Rola Sleiman to the ministry of Word and Sacrament -- the first woman ever to be so ordained in the Middle East.
In 2016, in al-Hasakah, in NE Syria, the Rev. Mathilda Michael Sabbagh was appointed as an assistant pastor in her hometown NESSL church to assist in duties, but not ordained for the sacraments. After years of service, finally Mathilda ("Matti") was fully ordained on April 3, 2022.

Pastor "Matti" is the 1st woman pastor in Syrian Christian history, since the 1st century C.E. where they were first called "Christians" (in former Syrian Antioch, Acts 11:26). It only took 2,000 years. Leave it to Presbyterians to lead the way to enlightenment in the Middle East.

Presbyterian Children’s Home and Services (PCHAS), Itasca, TX, provides Christ-centered care and support to children and families in need. PCHAS’ mission is a restatement of the biblical call in James 1:27 that true religion is this: to look after orphans in their distress.
PCHAS believes that the most powerful way to help children is by strengthening their families. They accomplish this by living into a philosophy of care which is to be family centered, strength focused, and goal driven.
