Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Bright School is trying something new this year in our recognition of MLK Day on Monday, January 20. As you know, in the past we have focused our attention on the important meaning of the day here at school. This year, however, we'd like to give families, if they so wish, to take advantage of the community's celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.'s life.
Various churches, art galleries, and civic and service organizations will hold events on the 20th (and throughout the week), all with the intention of living out Dr. King's teaching around communities coming together in unity and love. Some of our families have expressed a desire to attend these events, and we hope this change will encourage others to do so as well.

Here are some suggested events:

50th Annual Memorial March: Line up begins at noon in front of the Federal Court Building. The march begins at 1 p.m. The route is MLK Blvd. to Olivet Baptist Church. Meet Mr. Morgan at noon at the south end of Georgia Avenue near the new Miller Park stage. Wear a Bright School shirt and walk with our school banner.

Bessie Smith Cultural Center: Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Walk around and enjoy the historical and art displays. One of the current displays is the "Divine Nine" about African-American sororities and fraternities. Adult tickets are $7, children (6-12) are $3 and ages 5 and under are free.

Lookout Mountain Conservancy Day of Service: 9 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Please go to the website and sign up in advance. A waiver provided on the website must be signed for all children.

Hunter Museum of American Art: Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit "Southbound: Photographs of the Old and New South" begins January 31. Tickets for children are free.

Chattanooga Library: The library is closed on January 20, but there is an African-American Family Film Series on Saturdays in February for Black History Month. For more information and the schedule, click here.

AVA Gallery: "Rooted in Color: The Art Collection of James McKissic" includes works of African American artists from the 20th century to the present. Open until February 21. The gallery is open Tuesday-Sunday and closed on Mondays.

More information and events are listed on the City of Chattanooga's Day of Service website.

Bright News
Our school is now certified as a Schoolyard Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. This means our campus provides food sources, clean water, shelter and places for animals to raise their young.

Support Third Grade and Koalas
Third grade is selling $3 koala pencil toppers in the book store to support their efforts to adopt a koala in Australia named Jimmy Jams (see photo). Recently, many parts of Australia have been destroyed by fires, and koalas and their habitats have suffered. The bookstore is open Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Plan Ahead: Spaghetti Noodle Collection on January 30
For the past three years, we have had a food drive in conjunction with the fifth grade vs. faculty basketball game. The game this year is Thursday, January 30. On that day, we're asking all students to bring 16 oz-boxes of spaghetti noodles that we will donate to the Community Kitchen. Please don't bring the spaghetti before that day. Our goal is 1,000 boxes. We only need the 16 oz size. Prizes will be given for the most donations by class and grade.
