Yes, it's true. I trepidaciously leave your chamber in another's hands. Six years ago, I was new to the world of chambers, but knew I loved where I lived and liked playing the hostess with the mostest. I also knew I don't do status quo. So, off into the land of the unknown, I threw the chamber. Fortunately, for the most part, it always landed just fine.
Tiered dues structure, new building, new logo, new name, and truly becoming a regional voice and trusted resource. I can honestly say, I am so very proud of the chamber that exists today. The support and guidance of our Board of Directors, the loyal dedication of our Ambassadors, and our cadre of "usual suspects" partners gave me the confidence and strength to follow a new path, a bigger path.
I am excited to start a new career as the Director of Advancement for Coastal Hospice. My office will be in the Stansell House, so, not going too far away! Plus, they are wonderful chamber partners so I will be popping up from time to time. We ask for patience and a welcoming spirit as we identify my successor. I have no doubt they will hit the ground running and prove to be a steadfast torch bearer.
Another source of pride is that we have been selected as the first and only Eastern Shore chamber to host the US Chamber of Commerce's National Civics Bee. This is such an exciting opportunity for our middle school students. There are many sponsorship levels with statewide (and potentially Nationwide!) exposure. Please consider supporting this effort for our kids. Check out the sponsorship opportunities here.
As I sign off on my last Chamber Chatter, I want to thank you all for your friendship, support, and leadership. Our "little chamber that could" did and YOU helped make that happen. Best wishes to my successor, the Board, and you all. Til we meet again.....

Maryland State Board of Elections Encourages Marylanders to Serve Their Community as Election Judges
Eligible Marylanders can earn money and help other residents cast their votes by serving as Election Judges. Election Judges check in voters, provide instructions and answer questions, and generally contribute to a smooth and secure voting experience in the polling place. To apply to be an Election Judge, use SBE’s online form or contact your local Board of Elections.
Additionally, eligible 14–15-year-olds can serve as Election Day Pages. Pages are student volunteers who, under the direction of Chief Election Judges, assist Election Judges and voters on Election Day. To become an Election Day Page, apply using our online form or contact your local Board of Elections.
“Election Judges are vital to our democracy and conducting election,” said State Administrator Jared DeMarinis. “Serving as an Election Judge is an opportunity to actively participate in the democratic process, ensure its integrity, and help your fellow Marylanders exercise their right to vote. I encourage every eligible Marylander to consider joining us this November as an Election Judge and help safeguard the voice of every voter."
This year, Election Day is Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Early Voting will run from Thursday, October 24, 2024 to Thursday, October 31, 2024
National Poll Worker Recruitment Day is a national day of action established by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to inspire civic engagement and encourage people to sign up to become poll workers. The initiative aims to address the continued need for poll workers to sign up ahead of the general election in November to Help America Vote and strengthen our democracy.

The Worcester County Chamber of Commerce in Ocean Pines proudly announces the launch of the 2025 National Civics Bee®, an initiative aimed at encouraging more young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities. Hosted in partnership with The Civic Trust® of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the competition in across Maryland’s Eastern Shore will inspire middle schoolers to become better informed about American democracy, to engage respectfully and constructively in the community, and to build greater trust in others and institutions.
Middle school students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade from public, private, charter, and home schools are invited to take part in the first-round civics essay competition. After a distinguished panel of judges review the essays, the top 20 students will be selected to advance to their local competition: an in-person live event featuring two rounds of civics questions followed by a Q&A round to test their civics knowledge. The Worcester County Chamber of Commerce in Ocean Pines will host its local competition in the spring of 2025. The local finalists and top winners will receive various prizes, including prizes worth at least $500 for the first-place student.
Participants in the National Civics Bee® will have the chance to gain recognition for their civics knowledge and skills and compete for prestigious prizes throughout the competition. The competition enables students to explore issues that matter to their communities, furthering their understanding of civic engagement and fostering responsible citizenship. Winners from each of the local competitions across Maryland will be invited to take part in the state finals. The first-place winner of the state finals will receive a trip to Washington, D.C. to compete for prizes worth at least $50,000 during the national championship in the Fall of 2025.
“This will be the very first time Maryland’s Eastern Shore middle schoolers will have the opportunity to take part in this competition. We are extremely proud to have been selected by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and look forward to this being an annual thing, said Kerrie Bunting, President of the Worcester County Chamber of Commerce in Ocean Pines.
“Fostering a deep understanding of civics and government among our young students is critical to the vibrancy of democracy and civic life in America. The National Civics Bee® provides a unique platform for them to not only showcase their knowledge but also become active and engaged citizens of the future,” said Hilary Crow, vice president of civics at the U.S. Chamber Foundation.

Protecting Our Beloved Wildlife
Assateague Island Alliance (AIA) was formed January 1, 2008 as the only non-profit Friends Group organization to promote the education, awareness, and stewardship of Assateague Island National Seashore’s wildlife and natural resources for the enjoyment of current and future generations. All proceeds directly benefit Assateague Island National Seashore.
Assateague Island Alliance partners with the Assateague Island National Seashore to promote the awareness and protection of the island’s wildlife and natural resources for the enjoyment of current and future generations.
Assateague Island Alliance is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors (BOD). Each year, volunteer recommendations are made to the board for new members, replacing those who have served their term. Volunteers are typically individuals who have a passion for the island and who have demonstrated a willingness to “give back to others.”
