May's Word of the Month: Equity
This month's value is equity. We asked UConn Police Lt. Jennifer Moskowitz
to share her perspective, both as a woman in the male-dominated field of law enforcement, and as a police officer with a mission to serve a diverse public. "We need to recognize that not every member of the community is at the same level." What does equity mean to you?

Not Letting Her MS Define Her
Meet Adeline Martinez, a clinic office assistant in our nephrology practice. At Walk MS: Greater Hartford 2023 April 29, she didn't let the rain stop her, just like she doesn't let her multiple sclerosis stop her from serving her patients and living her life. Read more about Addy, pictured here with Dr. Jaime Imitola.

Studying a Spike in Youth Mental Health Crises
A fresh analysis finds a rise in emergency room visits for mental health crises among children, teens, and young adults. Psychiatric epidemiologist Greg Rhee and collaborators from multiple institutions published their findings in the latest Journal of the American Medical Association. Read details.

I recently attended a CPR course and we learned also how to use AEDs (automatic external defibrillators). When I came to work I looked for one on our floor and asked other employees and no one knew where there was one. The floor I work on is a nonpatient floor in the Outpatient Pavilion. I finally saw one in the outside hallway away from the offices near the bathrooms, which to me is way out of the way. I feel that employees should all know where to find these AEDs and somehow this should be addressed. It might be in a manual or somewhere but it would really help to stress that everyone know where they are in their work area in case of an emergency.
Thank you for your suggestion. It’s been nearly three years since we installed 30 AEDs and Stop the Bleed kits throughout UConn Health, so now’s a good time for a reminder of where to find them.
Better yet, Fire Chief William Perez recommends getting the free PulsePoint AED App, which will make this information readily available on your phone. When the need arises, every second counts!
I appreciate your interest in educating yourself and your colleagues about these life-saving resources on our campus. Thank you for raising this.

Offering 'Blessing of the Hands'
The “blessing of the hands” is a yearly Nurses Week tradition, a symbolic representation of how nurses deliver care and compassion and are a blessing to all the patients for whom they care. While I plan to say a blessing of the hands during the awards ceremony, it would be my honor to also bring the blessing to any nurse's work area.

Screening Firefighters for Skin Cancer
Why are these dermatologists, residents, and medical students at our firehouse? They just got done screening more than 40 firefighters — both ours and from the community — for skin cancer. Because of their occupational exposures, firefighters are known to have increased risk for melanoma and other cancers. The free screening event for firefighters on "Melanoma Monday" (May 1) was intended to raise awareness and remove some barriers to preventive medicine.
