Pedestrian safety month is celebrated every year nationwide to bring attention to ways to stay safe on the road. This year, Henrico County would like to take this opportunity to raise awareness on the issue of pedestrian fatalities happening in our county.
As of April, Henrico is second in Virginia this year for the most pedestrian fatalities, following only Fairfax County. On average, our community is losing one pedestrian per month to these preventable tragedies.
We are asking all residents to practice safety on the road, regardless of your method of travel. Drivers, stay alert and off your phone, and be mindful of speed limits. Pedestrians, do your best to stay visible on the road. This can include light-colored and/or reflective clothing and lights to make sure drivers can see you. Together, we can look out for each other and get home safely, every time.
We have set up a web page on the Department of Public Works' website with information of all of our pedestrian safety initiatives, campaigns and more. In addition, our Board of Supervisors recently approved an additional $1.5 million to this year's budget for lighting along priority pedestrian safety corridors and intersections.
