Why is spelling so tough?
Most young students use some form of phonics program when they first learn to "read." However, phonetic spelling is often wrong. It turns out that words are spelled like they
mean, not like they sound! Consider these three words:
walked, rented, played
Spelled phonetically they would be
walkt,
rented,
playd.
But, if you know that all three words mean "
did something in the past", and you've learned that there is only one suffix that means
in the past, then you know that all three words
must end with -
ed!
