‘Tis the season for festive lights, holiday music, good food and connecting with friends and family. But for many the holidays can be a time of stress. This year in particular has been difficult and isolating for many, and the holidays may be especially hard for those experiencing loss.

While this holiday season will look different as we adapt our usual routines to keep our loved ones safe from the spread of COVID-19, there are many ways to celebrate safely. Here are some tips to have a healthy, happy and safe holiday season:

Stay connected while celebrating safely
Gather with the members in your own household or virtually connect with loved ones. Share a special meal, game or movie night with the members who live in your household. Or virtually celebrate with video gatherings of friends and family to share a meal or cheers together.

Create new traditions
Create holiday joy while staying socially distant. Send holiday recipes to friends and family, sharing photos of your delicious creations. Get crafty at home by making wreaths, candles or baking. Or start a holiday photo contest with your loved ones (e.g. ugly sweater or holiday lights) which could become your new annual tradition.

Take care of yourself
Eat healthy foods, exercise and take some time to recharge by going for a walk, reading or listening to relaxing music. Pay close attention to your mental and emotional health during this time. If you’re feeling sad and hopeless or are having trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional.
