Social Security Safety Nets:

Ways to Work and Still Have Support

Many people who get disability benefits worry about trying to work. They are afraid they will lose their benefits right away if they take a job. But Social Security has rules, or “safety nets,” that let people try working without risking their Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Each program has its own rules that support work.

If you are on SSI, you can use this SSI calculator resource to understand how work wages reduce SSI payments.

If you are on SSDI, you can use this Trial Work Period/Extended Period of Eligibilty (TWP/EPE) tracking sheet to track TWP months used and build a timeline on if/when SSDI payments should stop or continue. (This is a Word document that will download when you click the link.)
