SSA safety nets in action

We want to share a great example of how Social Security’s work incentives and safety nets can provide peace of mind for those who are working while receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).

Several years ago, an individual who came to us for benefits counseling became a remarkable success story, working full time for the past two years and successfully transitioning off SSDI benefits because of their earnings.

Then, suddenly, they had some medical complications related to their disability and couldn't return to work full time. Fortunately, Social Security provides crucial support during such circumstances.

After completing the Trial Work Period, SSDI beneficiaries enter a 36-month Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE). During this time, benefits can be reinstated without a new application if earnings fall below the Substantial Gainful Activity level, which is $1,620 per month in 2025.

Because this individual was still within their EPE, they notified Social Security, which was able to restart their SSDI payments.

This safety net allowed them to work full time while they were able to and gave them the protection to resume receiving a check when they needed it. Learn more about SSDI work incentives and safety nets by watching our short video titled “SSDI Work Incentives.”
