President's Message

Greetings, and welcome to 2025! We here in the Work Systems Division hope that everyone had a safe and happy holiday season and are ready to hit the ground running to make 2025 the best it can be. And of course, by “best” we mean safe, efficient, and productive.

As we closed the book on 2024, our board and supporting volunteers worked to complete the review and acceptance process for our submitted abstracts for those heading the Atlanta for the 2025 IISE Annual Conference and Expo, May 31 - June 3. We experienced excellent growth in the number of submissions this year and are excited to see them each come to life. As we open this year, we are working to identify potential special sessions and guest speakers, review student paper submissions, and select the recipient of our Best Student Paper Award, sponsored by Dave Hampton.

Looking beyond the conference, Work Systems is looking forward to various activities this year, including refreshing the definition of “Work Systems” to more accurately reflect our progressing industries, including the growing adoption of AI and other technologies. What do you think when you see or hear “Work Systems”? Drop your thoughts to us on LinkedIn and Instagram.

As you all know, this organization is supported through the hearts and minds of our dedicated partners in both Industry and Academia; without them, none of this is possible. So first I want to again thank every volunteer that supports the IISE and the WS Division. Next, I want to extend an invitation to our members to help guide the direction of the Work Systems Division. Nominations are now open to serve as on the Work Systems board of directors. Directors serve a two-year term while the President serves a three-year term: 1 year as President-Elect, 1 year as President, and 1 year as Past-President. Generally, the time commitment is three to five hours per month with the term beginning June 1, 2025. Interested candidates or nominators should complete the nomination form by February 4, 2025, for consideration by the WS Nominating Committee. Here is a link to the nomination form.

I would like to close with another board member spotlight. Conrad Mitchell, a Technical Fellow and BDS Industrial Engineer at Boeing, rejoined our Work Systems board of directors in June 2024, having previously served from 2019 to 2021.  Read more about Conrad in the article below.

Thank you all for your continued support and attention!

Sincerely,

Greg Melroy

WS Division President

WORK SYSTEMS TEACHING RECOGNITION AWARD

Work Measurement (WM) is a fundamental building block that enables ISEs to understand time and build solutions that optimize around it. WM is currently undergoing a “modernization” as new tools, technologies and techniques allow data collection/analysis to be more agile, granular and accessible.  We would like to engage students and/or faculty to nominate teachers who have developed courses and/or content that support the evolution of Work Measurement.
