Passion & Grit - Letter from the Director
Passion and grit are two key qualities of what it takes to operate a successful business, according to the speaker at a recent business award ceremony I attended. There are many qualities of successful business owners and managers, but passion and grit rank at the high end of what it takes, and I would add leadership to the top of the list too.

If you look around McPherson, you will see many terrific businesses, but you can also spot those that are passionate about what they do. Have you noticed those putting up creative window displays to entice shoppers, offering new services to assist the needs of the community, and experimenting with new products to fulfill requests? These business owners or managers are constantly thinking about ideas to improve your shopping experience or your service satisfaction. You probably also notice those who genuinely look happy to see you walk through their door. It’s because they have a passion for what they do, and it shows!

Grit comes in when things aren’t always going the way they planned. Maybe it was a huge curveball like the pandemic or supply-chain shortages. Or the constant difficulties of doing business like the phone or internet being down, employees calling in sick, road work in front of their business, or a huge increase in utility expenses. All of these challenges wear on businesses, but those with that passion and determination show up and figure out a way to make it work.

I added leadership as a key quality, which could fill pages with a wide variety of examples, but what I am referring to today is leadership that creates a workplace culture that employees want to be a part of. They are part of a team that is invested in the process and the success. According to Forbes “A positive workplace culture improves teamwork, raises the morale, increases productivity and efficiency, and enhances retention of the workforce.”

We are fortunate to have extraordinary business owners and managers, whose passion, grit, and leadership are evident in the way they operate their businesses and the way they enrich our community!
It's Almost Picnic Time!
The McPherson Chamber of Commerce Rural Appreciation Picnic isn’t until Friday, July 22nd, but our Agriculture Committee has been working on plans for several months. This annual tradition to celebrate the agriculture community has been a special event for 52 years.

The picnic is sponsored by members of the McPherson Chamber of Commerce and will be served from 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. on July 22nd at the 4-H grounds, 600 W. Woodside. You won’t want to miss the freshly grilled hamburgers from Krehbiel’s Specialty Meats served with tasty baked beans from Knackies Meats and Sweets, along with juicy watermelon provided by PrairieLand Partners.
The Rural Appreciation Picnic is a way we can celebrate our Agriculture producers and families for their contributions to our way of life. This information from the Kansas Agriculture 2022 in partnership with the Kansas Department of Agriculture gives just a glimpse of the impact of agriculture. “Kansas agriculture continues to be a vital force in the state’s economy, bringing in dollars and providing many jobs. As the top industry in Kansas, agriculture accounts for over 40% of the total economy, and according to the most recent statistics, there are 58,300 farms in the state, producing and raising top crops and livestock. The Sunflower State’s top commodities include cattle and calves, wheat, corn, sorghum, and soybeans. The state’s nickname comes from another important crop, as Kansas ranks fourth in the nation in sunflower production.”

The Rural Appreciation Picnic will coincide with the kickoff of the McPherson 4-H Fair on July 22nd. Attendees will have time to enjoy the 4-H exhibits in the 4-H building and Chief Building before the picnic is served, then stay for a Live Food (dessert) Auction under the tent at 6 p.m., followed by the Meat Goat Show in the Livestock Arena at 7 p.m.

If you would like to join us in thanking our agriculture producers and families by contributing to the cost of the picnic, sponsorship can be sent to the McPherson Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 616, McPherson, KS.
