Success Stories
The following success stories are provided by our case management team at Eckerd Connects/Paxen and Equus Workforce Solutions - WorkSource Southwest Georgia. These include actual testimonials.

Donte Lee

From Setback to Success on the Road

Before joining the WIOA Program in March 2025, Mr. Lee had been steadily employed for three years. Unfortunately, due to no fault of his own, he lost his job and found himself at a crossroads. Despite the setback, Mr. Lee remained focused on his long-time dream: becoming an owner-operator in the trucking industry.

For years, Mr. Lee faced a series of unforeseen challenges that made it difficult to pursue the training necessary to obtain his Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Financial barriers, limited access to resources, and life's unpredictable turns kept him from moving forward. But his determination never faded.

Upon enrolling in the WIOA Program, Mr. Lee received the support, guidance, and training opportunities he needed to break through those barriers. With the help of dedicated career advisors and program resources, he successfully completed his CDL training.

Today, Mr. Lee is proudly employed as a Professional Truck Driver. He is now gaining valuable experience on the road and is one step closer to achieving his ultimate goal of becoming an owner-operator. His journey is a powerful example of perseverance, resilience, and the life-changing impact of workforce development programs.

Mr. Lee's story reminds us that with the right support and unwavering determination, success is always within reach.

Nina Martin

Nina Martin, a single parent from Georgia, faced significant barriers on her journey to self-sufficiency. As a high school dropout and teen parent struggling with unemployment, Nina also endured family challenges that weighed heavily on her mental health, leaving her feeling hopeless.

Her turning point came when a case manager referred her to Turner Job Corps. There, she enrolled to earn her High School Diploma and complete vocational training in Office Administration. The transition was far from easy—Nina experienced separation anxiety from her children and struggled to adapt to this new chapter in her life.

Recognizing the need for additional support, she was referred to Eckerd Connects for dual enrollment. Through Eckerd, she pursued career pathways training, employee essentials, and Work-Based learning to earn her Certificate of Completion. With the guidance of a Workforce Development Specialist, Nina discovered the many opportunities available to her through program completion.

She successfully completed soft skills training, gaining valuable abilities in resume writing, interviewing, independent living, and workplace readiness. She also completed Retail Fundamentals Training, an introductory course designed to prepare individuals for their first job or reentry into the workforce.

While progressing through the program, Nina encountered additional personal challenges that affected her focus. Eckerd responded by connecting her with counseling services and coordinating with Turner Job Corps to ensure she had reliable transportation and the resources she needed. During a period of uncertainty when the Turner Job Corps campus faced potential closure, Nina’s mental and emotional resilience was tested once again. Eckerd collaborated with community partners to help her navigate obstacles related to homelessness, employment, and training completion.

Through determination and hard work, Nina achieved her goals. She completed both career pathways training and paid work readiness training, funded through WorkSource Southwest Georgia. She gained hands-on experience as an Office Administrative Assistant, along with enhanced skills in communication, basic academics, and workplace professionalism. Supportive services, such as career counseling and job-related resources, further prepared her for success.

Today, Nina holds a Certificate of Completion in Office Administration from Turner Job Corps and is employed full-time. Her journey through Eckerd Connects’ Career Readiness program provided her with the tools, training, and confidence to create a brighter, more productive future for herself and her children.

Dashawn Hakins

Dashawn Hakins, a resident of a high-poverty area, came to WorkSource Southwest Georgia seeking assistance through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program. Meeting the eligibility criteria as both a Youth and Adult participant, Dashawn expressed a strong desire to pursue a career in the dental field.

Through WIOA, he received support via an Individual Training Account (ITA) to pursue his education and training goals. He also participated in labor market information (LMI) sessions and soft skills training designed to help him achieve and maintain self-sufficiency.

Determined to earn his dental assistant and dental radiology credentials, Dashawn enrolled in dental school to make his dream a reality. Despite facing challenges—including long commutes for both classroom and clinical training—he remained focused and committed to his goal.

His hard work and perseverance paid off. Dashawn successfully completed his training and is now employed as a Dental Assistant with Albany Area Primary Health Care, where he continues to build a rewarding career in dental health.

In his own words, “I would not have been able to get my dental certificate without help from WorkSource. Ms. Crystal was there to guide me and help me the entire way. It was more than just paying for the classes. It was someone there to encourage me along the way that helped me on track. I am very thankful for the program.

Dashawn Hakins was living in a high poverty area and came to WIOA seeking assistance. He met the criteria as a Youth and Adult due to being low income. He requested assistance with education training (Individual Training Account-ITA). He also received LMI and soft skills training to help him obtain and maintain self-sufficiency. His goal was to obtain his dental assistant credential and work in a dental office. He received ITA assistance with obtaining his dental assistant and dental radiology credential to help him become more marketable.   He attended Georgia Dental to reach this goal. He had to overcome obstacles while he was in training to include traveling farther than most participants from where he lived to not only attend class training but to also receive his clinical training as well. He was determined to reach his goal. He is currently working at Albany Area Primary Health Care as a dental assistant.

In his own words, “I would not have been able to get my dental certificate without help from WorkSource. Ms. Crystal was there to guide me and help me the entire way. It was more than just paying for the classes. It was someone there to encourage me along the way that helped me on track. I am very thankful for the program.
