Through the rest of the year, the year-over-year analysis in this newsletter will compare data from the current year to data from 2019. This shift will allow us to compare the pre-pandemic data to current labor market information, and help us provide a better analysis of the economic recovery.

Highlights from the recent report include: 

  • From April 2019 to April 2021, the Tulare County Employment Report showed an increase of 1.1 percent in the unemployment rate and a 3.3 percent decrease in jobs
  • The industry with the largest numerical month-over growth was Farm, while Local Government (Education) experienced the largest month-over numerical loss in jobs
  • From April 2019 to April 2021, employment decreased by 8,000 and the labor force decreased by 6,400

HOW DOES TULARE COUNTY'S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE CHANGE OVER TIME?
The California Employment Development Department (EDD) reported a 7.6 percent increase in Tulare County's unemployment rate, from a revised 9.9 percent in April 2019 to 11.0 percent in April 2021. 

The month-over-month unemployment rate decreased by 0.6 percent, from 11.6 percent in March to 11.0 percent in April 2021, slightly lower than the average month-over decrease of 1.3 percent.

HOW MANY JOBS HAVE COME AND GONE IN THE LAST YEAR & THE LAST MONTH?
2019 TO 2021 | A COMPARISON
From April 2019 to April 2021, Educational & Health Services showed the greatest numerical gain with an increase of 700 jobs, while Transportation, Warehousing & Utilities showed the greatest percent gain with a growth of 4.5 percent. Food Services & Drinking Places showed the greatest numerical decline with a loss of 1,300 jobs, while Accommodation showed the greatest percent decline with a job loss of 44.4 percent.
MONTH OVER MONTH | A COMPARISON
From March to April 2021, Farm showed the greatest month-over numerical and percent gains with an increase of 8,000 jobs and job growth of 25.9 percent. Local Government (Education) showed the greatest month-over numerical decline with a loss of 200 jobs, while Transportation, Warehousing & Utilities showed the greatest percent decline with a loss of 1.4 percent of jobs.
