FROM TRAINING TO TRUCKING: YOUR CDL QUESTIONS ANSWERED

The trucking industry is booming, and skilled CDL drivers are more in demand than ever. Whether you’re looking for job stability, higher earning potential, or the freedom of the open road, earning your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a great way to jumpstart a rewarding career.

But what does it take to succeed in CDL training? What challenges do new drivers face, and how can they prepare for a career on the road?

To answer these questions, we sat down with our experienced CDL instructors at BCTC, David Wright and Tony Basso, to get their expert insights on CDL training, industry opportunities, and what students need to know before getting behind the wheel.

Why should someone consider getting a CDL?

A CDL offers a stable job in an essential industry, with the benefit of a livable wage. It’s also a crossover industry—trucking can be a great backup plan if you’re coming from fields like construction, electrical work, or other trades.

What are the benefits of having a CDL?

There are many benefits to earning a CDL. First, there’s the stability—the trucking industry is essential, so there’s always work available. You can find a variety of job opportunities, whether you’re looking for local, regional, or long-haul routes. CDL drivers typically have good benefits and enjoy the freedom of being able to see new places while getting paid. It’s also an independent job where you work without direct supervision. And for those who want variety, there are so many different niches and career tracks—like flatbed, hazardous materials, tankers, and car transport.

What are the most important skills for new CDL drivers to master?

Safe operation on the road is absolutely crucial. You also need to master double clutching and backing a tractor-trailer unit. Lastly, critical thinking and focus are key.

What’s your #1 tip for students in CDL training?

Do exactly what the instructors teach you. We give you all the tips, tricks, and clues to succeed. It’s important to come in with an open mind—don’t come with preconceived ideas or notions.

What’s a common misconception about trucking?

One common misconception is that anyone can do it. In reality, trucking requires a certain kind of individual—someone who is willing to learn, be disciplined, and stay focused.

What advice would you give someone considering CDL training?

Come in with a willingness to learn and be ready to follow the process as it’s taught. Have realistic expectations about the time commitment. There’s a lot of studying involved, like practicing pre-trip inspections at home and passing the permit test.

Anything else you’d like prospective students to know?

Tony and I want students to understand there's a lot of work and learning involved. Just showing up to class won’t guarantee success. You’ve got to be willing to learn things you’ve never encountered before.

BCTC's CDL training program equips you with the essential skills to earn your full CDL license. Upon completion, students receive the CDLA I certificate, preparing you for a successful career in transportation. This CDL program meets all the requirements for entry-level driver training (ELDT) set forth by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
