Thank you to Biltmore Village Cooperative Parish!

Haywood Street Congregation would like to express our sincere gratitude to Biltmore Village Cooperative Parish for their gift of $100,000 for Respite construction. This is their second significant donation for the Respite expansion. Their generosity is helping to fulfill the vision of providing space for more neighbors as they rest and recover during a health crisis. In addition to this gift, a team from BVCP regularly brings an evening meal to Respite, getting to know friends and sharing life together. We are so grateful for their partnership and all the ways they show up to share God's love!

Getting to Know One Another

Over the past few months, new staff positions have been created to aid in carrying out Haywood St.'s mission. Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing a bit about these roles and the people who have filled them.

Sheneika S.:

Coordinator of Resident Life,
Lady Gloria Ridge Community

We are excited to share that Sheneika S. has been named Coordinator of Resident Life at Lady Gloria. If the opposite of housing is estrangement, not homelessness, the primary role of the Coordinator of Resident Life is to interrupt isolation through relationship. In this position, Sheneika will be deepening fellowship individually and community-wide, engaging in person-centered social work, and serving as a steward of life together.

Welcome, Sheneika!

Haywood Street Highlights

When Richard (pictured above with Jinnia, Lynda, and Myscha) decided to spend the summer in Asheville, he researched places to serve the community. We are glad he found Haywood St. Each week he has shown up with joy and enthusiasm for the Downtown Welcome Table. This was his last week in town and we wish him well on his next adventure. While seasons together are fleeting, the impact of relationship is lasting.

On Thursday, residents and community partners met to welcome Sheneika into her new role as Coordinator of Resident Life at Lady Gloria.

From Laura B.'s prayer during the gathering:

"On this corner, with a beautiful mountain view, may we see the possibilities of what is to come. To be connected, to grow together, and provide liberation here in Asheville. We lift this up in love."

Matthew 20:1-15

With grapes swollen on the vine, the harvest isn’t going to pick itself. Determined, Jesus cranks on the ignition until his farm truck coughs to life. At first light, he drives to the pawnshop side of town, stopping at a gravel parking lot. The labor pool is already assembled: men with curved knives and disfigured skin, reapers in overalls and broken boots. Jesus calls out, “If anyone wants work in the vineyard, jump in the back. Pay is $10.”

After dropping the morning shift off with the field boss, he circles back. More crews are waiting at 9:00, 12:00, and 3:00. They climb in and slam the tailgate shut, relieved to be on the clock. At 5:00, one hour before quitting time, Jesus finds a few unhireables waving handwritten signs pleading for a day in the dirt. Rolling down the window, he asks, “Why haven’t you been picked up?” “No one,” a man says, “needs our sweat.”

“Get in.” Sixty minutes later, the whistle blows. The foreman gathers the early and late comers and begins distributing their earnings. “Ten bucks for you,” he says, “ten bucks for you; ten bucks for you; ten bucks for you.” Once the morning shift realizes what’s happening, they organize a grievance committee: “We’re senior staff, entitled to make more because we worked harder. How dare you cheat us?”

Once the bellyaching stops, Jesus responds: “Brothers, please accept your recompense and excuse yourself for the evening. Payroll is not your responsibility. No one came up short, and we agreed on a daily wage. Why is grace so offensive if it blesses your neighbor?” In this upsetting parable, shared with the disciples as they turn towards Jerusalem, what do we learn about God’s employment practices?
