E-Digest for March 2021
Mental Health Benefits of Gardening
It is finally warming up outside, and many of us are itching to get outside to enjoy the sun and get some fresh air. Of course, with the current social distancing rules, we must all be careful of how we are spending our outdoor time. Luckily, this is also the perfect time to start a new hobby so why not try gardening? Gardening can help you practice gratitude, as well as connect with others and nature. Go to the Therapy Centre website to learn about the positive effects of gardening on mental health. Visit the Inspirations and Celebrations website for tips on how to turn gardening into a joyful meditation practice.
Container Gardening
Container gardening is a great way to get things growing when you live in an apartment, do not have adequate outdoor space, or if the weather is not cooperating. Go to the Old Farmer's Almanac website to learn how to grow salad greens, herbs and even potatoes in container gardens! If you are preparing your garden outdoors, explore the planting calendar for our region.
Gardening and Your Pet
Pets may not share your love of gardening, but that does not mean they are not interested in the end result. For some pets, this can involve chewing, digging or walking through the yard. Not only can this undo all your hard garden work, but some plants and gardening products can be unsafe or even toxic to pets. Go to the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society website to learn what you can do to keep your garden pet-friendly and your pet garden-friendly.
