World Affairs Council of Miami Re-Established!
We're proud to announce that the World Affairs Council of Miami is back! A group of volunteers started working on reviving the organization a few months ago, and we're happy to announce that we are now incorporated with the State of Florida and in the process of attaining 501(c)(3) status.

You're receiving this e-mail because you registered for our informal "World Affairs Happy Hour" earlier this month, or because one of our volunteers suggested your name. With just word of mouth, we had over 100 attendees (see some photos above)! Thanks to all who attended, and we're looking forward to future social events, when the COVID situation allows again. We'll include details in an upcoming message and on our social media platforms.

We are planning a Speaker Series now. Details on our first virtual event on September 2 with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and other partners are below in "Upcoming Events," along with announcements of events by other organizations we think you might find interesting. We welcome submissions!

We will be announcing education programs and discussion forums in future messages.

Our Board of Directors is expanding. Board members currently include:

Aaron Rosen, President
Lynare Robbins, Secretary
Darina Popova, Treasurer
Maria Rodriguez, Director
Paul Griebel, Director
Jon Ward, Director

We're also building an Advisory Board, and will be making some announcements in our next message!

We're working on a web-site, so if you're interested in volunteering or have suggestions for programs or to add names to our e-mail list, please contact us directly at [email protected].

Refugee Assistance Alliance & Taste of Syria, September 25
Miami receives refugees from all over the world. We're happy share information from organizations which assist refugees, including the Refugees Assistance Alliance (RAA). Below is a message from the RAA on how you can volunteer to directly help refugees from specific regions here in Miami:

Refugee Assistance Alliance (RAA), a local nonprofit organization, provides services to refugees from the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, is looking for community groups, faith-based organizations, civic organizations, etc. to serve as a Community Sponsor for incoming refugee families starting in 2022. Community Sponsorship has been used successfully in many countries around the world to help resettle refugees.

RAA works specifically with refugees from the Middle East, Asia, and Africa because they often have a harder time integrating into our community due to their lack of English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole. They have spent the past three and a half years pairing volunteers with refugees to help them learn English and navigate their new life in the U.S. They have seen the transformative work of pairing volunteers with refugees, and they believe that transformation will only be strengthened through Community Sponsorship Groups. If you're interested in learning more about Community Sponsorship with RAA, please contact Kristen Bloom at [email protected].

We're looking forward to the Taste of Syria with Takht Al-Nagham on Saturday September 25 at the North Beach Bandshell, an event supporting the RAA. For details go to https://www.rhythmfoundation.com/. We're also planning a joint virtual event focused on refugee assistance in September; details coming.
