City of Berkeley 4th Annual WIC-Nic
Celebrating WIC’s 50th Anniversary!

On August 2nd, Berkeley once again hosted this celebration of community and brought the crowd (~140 families and ~34 community partners) for a day of fun and connection!
Monique Sims, Berkeley WIC Director, states the following in her letter of thanks,
"Thank you for another great WIC-nic! It was clear that everyone was truly having FUN! Looking around, we saw lots of smiles, hugs, snacking, playing, dancing and an overall feeling of connection. All of you really helped make the 4th Annual WIC-nic a special celebration, and we think the best one yet.
"We were honored by the presence of Senator Nancy Skinner and field rep for Assembly Member Buffy Wicks Stella Gryler, who presented us with certificates in recognition of WIC’s 50th Anniversary and World Breastfeeding/Chestfeeding Week. Interim Deputy Director of City of Berkeley HHCS Tanya Bustamante shared remarks about how WIC helps families."

The City of Berkeley WIC knows how to support breastfeeding and chest feeding families!
- 100% of participants begin breastfeeding or chest feeding in the first week.
- 89.84% continue any breastfeeding or chest feeding at 3 months.
- 66.66% exclusively breastfeed or chest feed through 6 months.
- 50% continue any breastfeeding or chest feeding through 11 months.

Alameda County WIC celebration
The ACPHD WIC Breastfeeding celebration was well attended and full of wonderful resources and community engagement. WIC clients who attended spoke of gratitude to WIC for putting on this health fair and for all they do all year long to support healthy infant feeding!

Stanford Tri-Valley Health Care
ACBC represented at Stanford Tri-Valley Health Care breastfeeding celebration on Tuesday August 6th! We chatted with dozens of providers and community members about many ways to support families - including dads too! We even had an expectant father stop by on a break to the cafeteria to ask for some last-minute pointers on starting off strong and where to go for help when needed!

National Breastfeeding Month is recognized in August each year.

This year's World Breastfeeding Week observance showcased the need to improve lactation support to reduce inequalities that exist in our society. There is also a special focus on breastfeeding in times of emergencies and crises.
Emergencies, such as natural disasters, can make it hard for parents and caregivers to feed their infants and young children safely.

Program Highlight: Community Health Center Network (CHCN) | |

Did you know...
that there are 8 health centers in Alameda County that are committed to providing excellent and affordable health care?
These centers are part of the Community Health Center Network (CHCN). CHCN is a non-profit Medi-Cal managed care organization, providing business administrative support for community health centers to focus on what matters most–patients.
Community health centers also support health equity. Institutional racism and implicit bias are interwoven into the health care system and highly impacts black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) patients. Health centers were formed in response to racism and inequity and have made tremendous strides in providing access and reducing disparities. Yet, health centers are embedded in a health care system with deep roots of inequity. Despite these barriers, CHCN continues to advocate and advance policy priorities that ensure health for all.

Fayette MacMaster, BS, LCCE, IBCLC
Fayette has currently joined Native American Health Center as the International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, IBCLC, for both the Breastfeeding Peer Counseling (BFPC) program and the Comprehensive Prenatal Services Program (CPSP).
For over 25 years, Fayette has been educating prenatal moms in both labor and delivery as a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator. She is passionate about educating parents on the benefits of breastfeeding as well as helping moms reach their breastfeeding goals.

Certified as an IBCLC in 2021, Fayette has experience in serving moms both within the inpatient and outpatient settings. She has worked in various Fresno County hospitals for over 14 years, of which 6 of those years she spent assisting postpartum mothers at the Baby Friendly hospital, St. Agnes Medical Center. Presently, she remains active serving in her private practice clients in Clovis where she resides.
Her Lactation services are centered in assisting all mothers with overcoming breastfeeding challenges such as, latching, painful nursing, milk supply issues, sleepy babies, etc. She is bilingual in both the Spanish and English languages and can provide Spanish Lactation services. She is extremely compassionate and welcomes all parents who need her assistance with breastfeeding and in learning more about their newborn needs. She is especially pleased to be able to serve the community at Native American Health Center.

In August, WIC celebrates 50 years of providing breastfeeding education and support for mothers.
Information on how to feed your baby can be overwhelming. WIC empowers mothers to make the best decision for their babies at each stage in the breastfeeding / infant feeding journey that is unique to them! From hunger cues to latching and milk supply, WIC staff are ready to educate, encourage, and embrace mothers on their feeding journeys.
Breastfeeding can be a challenging journey for many mothers, but it’s a journey with many benefits for both mom and baby. WIC helps parents learn the benefits and basics of breastfeeding, set goals, and overcome challenges with milk supply, cluster feeding and more. WIC’s expert teams provide personalized support and practical resources to help new moms overcome each unique obstacle in their journey.
Healthcare providers may not always have the time to show a mom how to latch her baby. With WIC, moms don't have to navigate breastfeeding alone. WIC provides the time, support, and expertise needed to overcome challenges and celebrate successes.

WIC is here for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) who breast and chest feed.
WIC knows that breastfeeding and chest feeding challenges are not the same for everyone. Language barriers and cultural norms can make it tough. We offer services for the AANHPI community which include:
- Breastfeeding guidance from experts who speak AANHPI languages
- Breastfeeding groups and peer-to-peer support
- Resource materials in languages like Hmong, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc.

Learning Together In-Home Early Childhood & Family Support (ECFS) Services
Alameda Family Services
In this locally designed in-home program option for pregnant women, toddlers, and preschool-age children, an assigned Early Child Care (ECC) Specialist will provide families enrolled with prenatal care, early childhood development, comprehensive health, and family support services.
Families enrolled in the Learning Together Program will receive priority placement for center-based services to support continuity of care that better supports families as they transition from prenatal to infant, home-based to center-based, and toddler to preschool.

This partnership supports outreach and application assistance for improved access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as the CalFresh Program in California, and promotes the Food Bank’s Emergency Food Helpline.

We provide free training and opportunities to network, grow community and create change.

We are currently meeting by Zoom, but hope to return to more in-person events this year!
