A Note from Founder, Lisa Orloff
November is upon us and has brought along a season of change and thanksgiving. With the holiday season just around the corner and COVID-19 cases on the rise in most of the country, millions of Americans will break with familiar traditions this year, to celebrate in ways that we hope will help keep us all safe and healthy. Granted, this may present some challenges, but I am confident in the resilient American spirit to meet these challenges.
I recognize that this will be hard for many of us, as we continue to live in unprecedented times. Celebrating holidays alone or with only your immediate household members may not seem like a holiday at all.
But these sacrifices will ensure health and safety for individuals and their families. One of the biggest challenges I have faced during this pandemic is helping complete strangers, while I have little control over losing family members and friends to COVID-19. However, I would rather they be safe than have them be physically with me. I invite you all to explore and share new and different ways to celebrate the holidays and keep the festive spirit alive.
In our November newsletter, you will read about holiday safety tips, other COVID-19 updates, and what World Cares Center has been up to this month.
Wishing each of you a wonderful and healthful holiday season, starting with a Happy Thanksgiving! Stay safe and be well.
Holiday COVID-19 Safety Tips

  • If possible, limit gatherings to those in your immediate household or try hosting a virtual meal with extended family
  • If attending a gathering, bring your own plate, cups and utensils; store your mask safely while eating and drinking; avoid going in and out of the kitchen while food is being prepared; and use single-use options for condiments and food containers
  • Remember the three W's: Wear a mask, wash your hands, watch your distance
  • Take World Cares Center's General Readiness: Reduce the Risk training
Giving Tuesday is December 1!
Did you know that so far in 2020, World Cares Center has distributed over 30,000 pieces of PPE? We would not have been able to do this without the help of generous supporters like you. Please consider donating to our 2020 #GivingTuesday campaign so that we can continue to protect and train disaster volunteers.
COVID-19 Update
COVID-19 cases are on the rise again across the United States. Find a free COVID-19 testing site in your borough, through NYC Health and Hospitals, here.

It is important to remember that even if it feels like life is returning to normal, the COVID-19 pandemic still presents a very real and present threat. Remember to wash your hands as often as possible, always wear a mask, and maintain 6 feet of distance from others whenever possible.
Disaster Volunteerism Academy Highlight
World Cares Center has recently revamped our Disaster Volunteerism Academy website, which includes over 30 trainings on various disaster readiness, preparedness, and response topics. Some of our updated trainings include:

Our Community Partners
As COVID-19 cases continue to rise across the country, World Cares Center has continued to help those in need. This past month, we partnered with the Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity (RISE) to distribute over 100 cloth masks and COVID-19 Safety Cards. We look forward to having more opportunities over the coming months to continue supporting our communities at home and around the country. If you would like to host a mask distribution in the greater New York City area, please email Michael at implementation@worldcares.org.
