The 42nd annual World Figure 8 Championship 3-Hour Endurance Race is now in the books. The final laps turned late Monday night at the Tom Wood Group Indianapolis Speedrome Powered by Lincoln Tech. 10 special awards are given each year with honors going to the driver and a $300 bonus check paid to each recipient.

Never set fast time at a Figure 8 race in your career? What better way to breakthrough than the World Figure 8 Championship! Tommy St John grabbed the pole position presented by JS Quality Masonry & Restoration becoming the first rookie to ever take the top spot. He finished 7th. Picking up a whopping 3 awards was another event first-timer, Michigan’s Eugene Worden. The “Big Machine” scored best finishing alternate presented by Mike Heimel Auction Service, the Sonny Thompson Memorial most improvement in position presented by Triple B Racing, and best finishing driver not from Indiana or Kentucky. Eugene started 35th and finished 9th.

Another rookie had an outstanding evening nabbing a pair of extra honors. The overall 3rd place finisher Matt Smith was the Sonny Eaton Memorial rookie of the race and race leader at the 2-Hour mark. Matt’s march to the front began in the 28th starting spot. Leading at the 1-Hour mark also garnered a $300 boost to one’s payday. 2017 World Figure 8 champ Mike Hadley Jr was leading the way then and eventually came home second in his title defense.

Indy’s Ricky Schaeffer III was a repeat recipient of the Art Groulx Memorial award for best finishing stock car. Ricky completed 270 laps to finish 16th after starting 42nd. Cory Harmon was the Best Finishing Kentuckiana driver. The Louisville area racer and Sportsdrome track champion was in the mix all evening long before finishing in the 4th position. And finally, the Hard Luck Starter award presented by Superior Finish Lawn & Landscape. Ronnie Basham III went pit side after only 8 laps and finishing 44th after qualifying 12th.
