World Pneumonia Day
12 November 2020
Pneumonia is the single biggest infectious killer of adults and children – claiming the lives of 2.5 million, including 672,000 children, in 2019.

This year World Pneumonia Day – on 12 November 2020 – occurs during a global pandemic that is dramatically increasing pneumonia deaths from COVID-19 and other causes.

COVID-19 could add 1.9 million to the death toll this year. This could increase ‘all-cause’ pneumonia deaths by more than 75%. No other infection causes this burden of death.

Disruptions to healthcare services are estimated to cause up to an additional 2.3 million child deaths – 35% from pneumonia and newborn sepsis.

Many countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America, struggling with heavy burdens of COVID-19 and child pneumonia deaths, will need effective strategies to fight both. Investments in infection prevention (masks, social distancing, hand washing etc), and improved diagnosis and treatment (with pulse oximetry and oxygen) can save lives during the pandemic – and beyond.

Chromatic Mueller Hinton
Chromatic MH is a chromogenic Muller Hinton for simultaneous identification and susceptibility testing of various microorganisms directly from clinical specimens.

In the Intensive Care Unit the mortality rates for VAP, sepsis, surgical site or intra-abdominal, catheter related infections are critically high. Direct M.I.C. on CSF, positive blood culture bottles and other specimens from critical patients and direct M.I.C. on bronchial aspirates from patients with VAP can contribute with timely and essential information to save the life of patients.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a normal inhabitant of the human upper respiratory tract. The bacterium can cause pneumonia, usually of the lobar type, paranasal sinusitis and otitis media, or meningitis, which is usually secondary to one of the former infections. Streptococcus pneumoniae is currently the leading cause of invasive bacterial disease in children and the elderly. Streptococcus pneumoniae is known in medical microbiology as the pneumococcus, referring to its morphology and its consistent involvement in pneumococcal pneumonia.

Bronchial pneumonia is most prevalent in infants, young children and aged adults. It is caused by various bacteria, including Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Streptococcus pneumoniae cells are Gram-positive, lancet-shaped cocci (elongated cocci with a slightly pointed outer curvature). Usually, they are seen as pairs of cocci (diplococci), but they may also occur singly and in short chains. When cultured on blood agar, they are alpha hemolytic. Individual cells are between 0.5 and 1.25 micrometers in diameter. They do not form spores, and they are nonmotile. Like other streptococci, they lack catalase and ferment glucose to lactic acid. Unlike other streptococci, they do not display an M protein, they hydrolyze inulin, and their cell wall composition is characteristic both in terms of their peptidoglycan and their teichoic acid.
VTM
Transport medium for Viruses, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma.
VTM is suitable for collection and preservation of clinical specimens containing viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), Chlamydia spp., Mycoplasma spp. and Ureaplasma spp. The transport medium can be used with swabs and aspirates and is available in a plastic, screw cap tube (or a bulk format, 200 mL glass bottle). The transported microorganism remains viable for 48 hours at room or refrigerated temperature. VTM does not contain guanidium thiocyanate.

✓ Storage at 10-25°C.
✓ Contains antimicrobial agents to minimize bacterial and fungal contamination, without affecting viruses, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma or Ureaplasma.
✓ A pH indicator (red phenol) indicates the medium integrity during the shelf life of the product.
✓ Shelf life: 1 year
✓ The tube stands upright on the laboratory bench thanks to the skirted, flat-bottom, while the conical shape allows an appropriate centrifugation of the sample.
✓ 16x100mm skirted tube with plastic red cap. Sterile. 100/pack
