E-Newsletter of World Sleep Society
From the President
Clete Kushida
As the new year approaches, I'm excited to announce the World Sleep Society's 2017 initiatives! With these three new strategic goals, we aim to further secure our place as a leader in international sleep medicine, research, and education.

1. International Trainee Program: This initiative is designed to select the best international trainees for rotations at sleep centers at major academic institutions so trainees can acquire sleep research skills from experienced investigators; trainees will be able to participate in major international sleep meetings and an annual Sleep Research Network meeting. Trainee candidates will apply to the program (which is expected to be one year in duration) and the accepted trainees will rotate through different sleep centers with the goal of training future international leaders in sleep research.

2. International Practice Guidelines Committee: This initiative consists of a committee composed of international experts in different sleep topic areas to endorse (or endorse with caveats) existing guidelines. The committee will distribute existing guidelines to task forces of topic experts to review the guidelines for consistency with international sleep medicine practices, and recommendations from the task forces and committee will be forwarded to our Governing Council for review and approval.

3. International Sleep Research Network: This initiative is to develop a vast international sleep research network, which will start with a directory in which researchers and clinicians can easily identify potential collaborators for their research. The directory will include names, contact information, areas of clinical and/or research focus, and existing collaborators, with the goal of providing investigators the ability to establish collaborations with others who share their scientific interests to further expand their research.

I look forward to announcing the progress of each of these initiatives within the coming months. Thank you for supporting and collaborating with World Sleep Society in our important mission.

Sincerely,

Dr. Clete Kushida, President

Associate Society Member Highlight: Bulgaria

Bulgarian Association of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Snoring was founded in 2012 in Varna, Bulgaria. Today, the society has 115 members. Dr. Mario Milkov explains, "Since 2012, we have organized two scientific symposia with international participation, one course on oral appliances for dentists and a surgical course for treatment of OSA and snoring." The society also held Bulgaria's first International Day of OSA and snoring.

Dr. Milkov opined, "For us it is great honor to be a society member of the World Sleep Society. Our organization is young and we have short experience. We hope to be in touch with the newest achievements in the field of OSA and snoring with the help of the WSS and to receive  support from our colleagues worldwide in a long and fruitful collaboration."

This was the second installment of our highlighted societies series. To be considered for this feature, join as an Associate Society Member.
