We are pleased to present the second quarter issue of TradeWinds, the official digital newsletter of the World Trade Center Washington, D.C. This issue includes a new feature, "Meet the Ambassador," which highlights the economic, trade, or cultural initiatives of a currently serving envoy in Washington. This edition spotlights Her Excellency Hanene Tajouri Bessassi, Ambassador of Tunisia, As Tunisia’s first female ambassador to the U.S., she is cultivating strong and lasting bilateral relations. Meet the Ambassador:

Her Excellency Hanene Tajouri Bessassi

Ambassador of Tunisia to the United States

In mid-May, we had the pleasure of hosting Her Excellency Hanene Tajouri Bessassi, Ambassador of Tunisia to the United States for our monthly WIPG Ambassador Reception. Ambassador Bessassi is Tunisia’s first female ambassador to the United States and has had a distinguished career in diplomacy. Ambassador Bessassi has previously served roles include Ambassador to Germany, Deputy Chief of Mission for the Tunisian Embassy to the United States, and Director of the Tunisia-EU partnership at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tunisia, among other positions. During her remarks, the Ambassador discussed the potential for increased collaboration, mutual growth, and the critical need for innovation and global entrepreneurship. Her insights provided a valuable perspective on how Tunisia and the U.S. can work together to achieve shared economic goals and strengthen bilateral ties.

2024 Annual Rail Symposium

The Japan International Transport and Tourism Institute (JITTI) hosted the Rail Symposium 2024,” focusing on “Value Creation for a Sustainable Society.” The symposium, held in partnership with the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), explored how passenger rails are viewed as environmentally-friendly transportation and their role in promoting sustainable urban development.

Building Bridges to Global Markets

The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) held its 2024 Legislative Summit at RRBITC in April, connecting America’s Hispanic business leaders with government and elected officials. This bipartisan effort aimed to influence legislative priorities and advocate for the interests of Hispanic businesses nationwide. The summit facilitated meaningful dialogues on policy and economic issues impacting the Hispanic community. Key topics included access to capital, workforce development, and strategies for driving economic growth within Hispanic communities. The summit featured prominent keynote speakers including Marisa Lago, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade.


An ancillary meeting hosted by the U.S. Commercial Service focused on their "Building Bridges to Global Markets" initiative designed to expand export opportunities for underserved communities. Discussions centered on strategies to enhance market access and support for minority-owned businesses, fostering inclusive economic growth. By promoting equity and inclusivity, the International Trade Association aims to ensure that all businesses have the opportunity to participate and thrive in the global economy.

H.E. Shaikh Abdulla Bin Rashid Al Khalifa

It was a pleasure to welcome back the Washington Intergovernmental Professionals Group (WIPG) at the end of May for an evening conversation and reception honoring the Ambassador of Bahrain to the United States, His Excellency Shaikh Abdulla Bin Rashid Al Khalifa. During his remarks, the Ambassador discussed importance of cultivating business and other bilateral economic partnerships that helps build stronger relations with the United States and other allies. Citing the Bahrain Vision 2030 initiative which aims to transform the economy from oil dependence to a productive, globally competitive economy, the Ambassador stated that this was the key focus of his mission in the United States

Washington Performing Arts & District of Columbia Public Schools

49th Annual Embassy Adoption Program - Mini UN

We are proud to continue our tradition of hosting the annual Washington Performing Arts and DC Public Schools' Embassy Adoption Program. An experience unique to Washington, DC, Secretary of the District of Columbia, Kimberley Bassett discussed how this innovative and award-winning program brings together DCPS 5th and 6th grade students with the world's largest diplomatic community. Through direct engagement with their adoptive embassies, students experience different cultures, and explore international relations in a hands-on environment. This experience broadens perspectives and fosters a deeper understanding of the global community, inspiring the next generation of leaders and cultivating a lifelong interest in global affairs.
