This week we're presenting ShowUp Gallery, Wellfleet Preservation Hall, and New Bedford Whaling Museum.
This week's exhibitions explore immigrant and refugee experiences, diaspora communities, and memory and nostalgia through artwork that blurs lines between past and present. From telling stories of resilience through a family's experience emigrating from Europe during WWII, to pulling at the strings of memory and nostalgia for days gone by, to celebrating 50 years of Cape Verdean independence across the globe, these shows delve into personal and community histories through mixed media, photography, sculpture, painting, poetry and more.

Safarani Sisters: Submerged In Time at ShowUp Gallery

This exhibition featuring new work by Iranian-born sisters Bahareh and Farzaneh Safarani that "reflect themes of celebrating memories." The sisters' work, paintings, photographs and mixed media that incorporate video elements, explore nostalgia and memory along with the happiness, trauma and mystery associated with those ideas. "Through these works, the sisters aim to give nostalgia an ethereal, dreamlike quality and invite the audience to celebrate the power of memory," according to a curatorial statement.The gallery is open Monday to Wednesday by appointment, Thursday to Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. ShowUp Gallery is located at 524B Harrison Ave., Boston MA. Beneath the Layers: Lisa Cohen at Wellfleet Preservation Hall

Image courtesy Wellfleet Preservation Hall. | | Wellfleet Preservation Hall presents Beneath the Layers: Lisa Cohen, a collection of artwork that, through artist Lisa Cohen's family's experience emigrating from Europe during WWII, "captures the emotional weight of displacement, the resilience of the human spirit, and the enduring power of family bonds ..." According to an artist statement, Cohen predominately uses "photographs with encaustic wax and transfers of images onto patinated metals." These techniques allow Cohen to "use layering and transparency, which help me tell stories of resilience in the face of adversity." Claridade: Cape Verdean Identity in Contemporary Art at New Bedford Whaling Museum

Image courtesy of Christian Gonçalves | | New Bedford Whaling Museum presents Claridade: Cape Verdean Identity in Contemporary Art, a show that "explores the Cape Verdean American and Cape Verdean experience through the lens of contemporary art and community storytelling." Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Cape Verdean independence from Portugal, this exhibition features sculpture, fiber arts, mixed media works on paper, paintings, poetry, and video installation by artists born on Cape Verde, those who emigrated to the United States, and those born in the United States and the Netherlands. Through this show, the museum aims to "demonstrate the rich cultural networks and shared heritage of this diverse group of celebrated artists."
