"Bread of God"

Rev. Hardy H. Kim

Dear Kris,

Every few weeks we get together as a community to connect with God and each other through something we call the Lord’s Supper. We’re remembering a meal that Jesus shared with his closest friends, during a time when there was a lot of trouble in his life and in the world.

What do we make of the fact that gathering around a table with food was a central part of Jesus’ earthly ministry? How does our remembering-by-eating-together shape our faith? Do the nuts-and-bolts aspects of that translate into anything meaningful for our walk with God and others?

I invite you to come this Sunday to share in a time of reflecting on the reality of food in our lives as we worship — and as we partake in a symbolic meal together. May it give us all strength and inspiration for our living!

With hope,

Hardy

Theme for Sunday

“‘Why do you spend money on what does not satisfy?’ What is at the heart of America that drives us to exploit the natural resources of the world? We eat and eat and eat, and are not satisfied. God says, ‘Listen to me and do what I say. You will enjoy the best food of all.’ Come to me and you will have life. Each of us in our journey must continue to choose life – abundant life – that satisfies as we pour out our lives in servanthood, in solidarity with the oppressed.”

Questions for Reflection
  • Is there a particular food that connects you deeply to yourself and to others? What is it? Why does it have that power for you?

  • Have you ever had a meal or food experience that changed your sense of who you are? Think about the details of that experience.

John 6:24-35

So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.

When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.” Then they said to him, “What must we do to perform the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” So they said to him, “What sign are you going to give us, then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ” Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
