"Blessings & Woes Are Not Metaphors"

Rev. Annanda Barclay

This Wednesday: Evensong @ 7 pm

Dear Kris,

Grace and peace to you! This Sunday, we gather as a community rooted in love, justice, and the radical hope of Luke 6:17-26. In this passage, Jesus meets a crowd yearning for healing and wholeness, offering blessings to those society overlooks and challenging systems of power. Together, we'll explore what it means to embody this sacred vision of lifting up the marginalized, seeking justice, and finding joy in solidarity.

Whether you're new to faith, questioning, or seeking a spiritual home that celebrates diversity and works for equity, may this be a congregation that welcomes you as you are. So come as you are! Bring your hopes, doubts, and dreams. Let's build a world where love overflows injustice and hate.

With gratitude,

Pastor Annanda

Theme for Sunday

“I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.”

― James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time

Questions for Reflection
  • Who in your life or community might be yearning for the healing and belonging Jesus offers in Luke 6:17-26? How can we as a community, extend solidarity to those the world devalues?

  • Jesus calls the marginalized "blessed" and warns against complacency in unjust systems. Where do you feel challenged to confront power or privilege in pursuit of collective liberation?

  • The passage speaks of "joy" even in struggle. How does solidarity with others, in both grief and hope deepen your sense of sacred purpose?

Luke 6:17-26

He came down with them and stood on a level place with a great crowd of his

disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon.

They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases,

and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured.

And everyone in the crowd was trying to touch him, for power came out from

him and healed all of them.

Then he looked up at his disciples and said:

"Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

"Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. "Blessed are you

who weep now, for you will laugh.

"Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you, revile you,

and defame you on account of the Son of Man.

Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven,

for that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.

"But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.

"Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. "Woe to you who are

laughing now, for you will mourn and weep.

"Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated

the false prophets."
