“In Life and In Death We Belong to God”
Rev. Rich Pak
Greetings!

What does it mean to be the church? In particular, what does it mean to be a part of our congregation? Each year we invite a group of youth to enter into our confirmation process in where they are taught about the faith and God’s calling of the church. And then we ask them to affirm that faith and accept that responsibility of being a church member. But this year, our church has also begun the process of re-visioning and reimagining who we are and what our congregation is called to be.

This Sunday we’ll begin our Confirmation Sermon Series in which we’ll dig into the faith of our church by examining the church’s most recent confession, A Brief Statement of Faith. This confession was written as our current denomination, the PC(USA), came into being.

I hope you’ll join us and our youth for this season of learning about the faith of our church, especially as we discern God’s vision for Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church.

Faithfully,
Rich

Please join us immediately following the Sunday service for our Coffee Hour (in-person in Trinity Court or online via Zoom).

Theme for Sunday

“The faith we confess unites us with the one, universal church. The most important beliefs of Presbyterians are those we share with other Christians, and especially with other evangelical Christians who look to the Protestant Reformation as a renewal of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Diversity remains. But we are thankful that in our time the many churches are learning to accept, and even to affirm, diversity without divisiveness, since the whole counsel of God is more than the wisdom of any individual or any one tradition.”

Questions for Reflection
  • If you’ve gone through Confirmation, what teachings about the faith stuck with you? What teachings do you disagree with or reject?

  • What does the word faith mean to you? Does the word faith invoke beliefs or relationships?

  • What does it mean to belong to a church with a diversity of beliefs and faith backgrounds?
Excerpt from A Brief Statement of Faith

In life and in death we belong to God.
Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit,
we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel,
whom alone we worship and serve.
